I think that thread answers itself .....it is a matter of opinion.
It will keep scratches off the lens and that is all.
I use one but godfrey is a better photographer than me and he does not use any.

check out my reply to "Suggestions for FZ20 Add-Ons". Should answer all of your questions. But just remember, you have a Leica lens so you need a high quality filter. And, YES, you need a filter!
