I just purchased the S80 and now hear there are rumours it's being updated or replaced. I too am confused by which to buy. I have the S50 and it is a rock solid camera.
I don't like the plastic front to the S80 and wonder if I should return it while I still can.
I like the looks of the canon SD 700, but don't see why spending money to go from 5 to 6 megapixzels makes sense.
HELP!!

from the announcement of the s50 to the s60 you have around 1yr 3 months. then from the s60-s70 you have 3 months. then from s70-s80 you have 1yr. I suppose since a lot of cameras are coming out now and the canon A620 and rebel XT are both also expecting a replacement the s80 replacement might be announced at or around the same time a few weeks from now. however the s90 as it will probably be called will probably not come out on sale until october or november.
Now onto the SD700 it is a great camera and very popular. I think you should know however that megapixels are not very important in cameras once you get to 4MP pictures appear the same in 4X6 prints. unless you want to crop there will be no difference between cameras. the diff between sd700 and s80 is that the SD 700 goes to ISO 800 instead of the 400 that the s80 goes to. also the s80 has some more manual functions.
so in closing the s80 and SD 700 are the mostly the same camera except in the few previosly mentioned differences. and I will repeat that unless you want to crop or make large prints there is little to no difference between the 6 and 8 megapixels.

Ben, thank you....so the sd700 would be a fine choice, IF I need to update from the S50.
I think the SD700 has a metal casing and is smaller too, then the s80. Other features aside.
But, would you see a huge reason to go from the S50 to the sd700 or should I wait or....
Thanks for your replies!!

if you can wait 2-3 weeks you should since some cameras will be getting upgrades. I am not sure if you have heard about the Canon A620. it is kind of bulky for a compact and by no means ultracompact but it is a very popular camera and is expecting an upgrade soon. I am not sure but I would guess the s80 will also be replaced soon as I said before. so just wait then you can choose s90, SD700, or wait for something else.
