Hello All,

I'm new here and have begun the process of shopping for my first DSLR. I decided that the Nikon D50 would be the perfect camera for me to start with. I'm not ready to buy just yet but I figured the two lens kit (Nikkor 18-55mm and 55-200mm) would be a nice set up.

I've been fortunate enough to actually go to the B&H in New York an have a look around a few years ago long before I caught the photography bug and at the time I bought a Canon A80. (Nice little camera). Anyway I went to the B&H web site to check it out and they don't have the kit in stock. I seem to remember reading something about shortages or possibly the kit being discontinued. I'm not trying to spread rumors just looking for information and suggestions.

I've read some of the comments from many on this forum and have taken note of the Sigma 18-200mm as a possible single lens alternative.

Thanks

The 55-200 isn't all that great towards the 200mm end, and you would be well adviced to instead go for a 1 kit lens kit with the 18-55, and then get a Sigma 70-300 APO DG lens, which will preform better at the 200mm end, and which offers the extra 200-300 mm range, and which also offers a 1:2 macro mode.
For around 200$.

Thanks for the recommendation.

I didn't realize the Sigma 70-300mm had some macro capabilities. Macro photography does intrest me, flowers in particular, so that will be useful intially before going all out for a specific macro lens down the line.
