D70s button lockup

I have a new D70s with a lockup problem, the camera worked fine until recently. The buttons (menu, playback, etc.) on the back of the camera are not working while the mode dial is in auto mode. I can take a picture and the picture will be displayed, but I cannot scroll through any other pictures. I can rotate the mode dial and the buttons then function normally.

Has anybody experienced this issue? Is this a known issue? I've also searched the Nikon question and answer area without luck.

Have you tried just doing a reset?

The 2 button reset does not help. The factory reset did fix this the last time it happened. I was hoping that there is another answer other than pushing the factory reset every time the camera has a problem.

I would suggest contacting Nikon for a possible return. Better to be without the camera for a couple of weeks than face the frustration of a cronic malfunction.
