I made an amateur lens comparison of the:
Nikon 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G ED-IF AF-S DX Zoom
and
Sigma 17-70mm F2.8-4.5 DC MACRO

Thank you very much! Great job!
I was really torn between this two when I bought my D70s. I finally went for the Sigma and up to now I haven't regret it - a great lens.
Thanks for these.
The Sigma 17-70 has been on my list as well so these are very useful. I'm just waiting to see if the rumoured Nikon 18-135VR lens actually arrives with the D80 before I decide on my next purchase.

I found that the Nikkor lens does focus quicker and quieter, but image quality was a wash.
If the 18-135 VR is even close to the sharpness of the 18-200 it will replace my Sigma 18-125 as the day-to-day utility lens. Hopefully both the D80 and the new lens will not take 6 months for delivery.

what do you all think of the sigma 18-70 compared to the sigma 17-50 F2.8
more range but the shorter oneis 2.8 all the way thru

Personally I think anytime you have a constant aperture it’s better. You have to ask yourself is it worth the extra price and sacrificing some focal range?

After using both lenses for a while. I decided the Sigma was better for me. I have sold the Nikon 18-70. George is right the Nikon was a little faster focusing but not that noticable to me.

You do gain a bit in max. aperture, handling and macro mode... and a bit less distortion. To me it seems the Sigma is a very nice choice.
