The S400 has been my faithful companion during our last couple of vacations and a lot at other times too. I simply love this baby and it's never disappointed me. But then I loved my S100, a hundred or so years ago, and my S210.

Now they had to bring out the SD300.
I first looked at it in September (in Europe) and was amazed by it's smaller size, lighter weight, bigger screen PLUS much faster speed.

After reading the review here, I thought I better wait until a store, that accepts money back returns, has them in stock.
Three days ago I got the SD300 and have now done a multitude of side by side picture taking tests.
In all different situations and lighting conditions, my tests have shown that I can not tell which picture was taken with which camera until I look at Properties. It is truly amazing that any two cameras this different can have such identical results.
One commissioned salesman is going to be very happy when he finds out that the SD300 is a definite keeper.

Why do people try to point out shortcomings when really, for all practical purposes, there are none.
What purple? If there is any, I'm not able to find it. And if it's this hard to find when you're specifically looking for it, than why worry about it.
Oh yeah, and you can't change the battery when the camera is on a tripod.
Give me a break, who cares? I've never had to change a battery, while my camera was on a tripod yet.
Let's look at the real issues and than decide on what really counts.
I've looked at the Sony (very weak flash and no optical viewfinder) as well as Casio, Fujy and Panasonic and each had something missing that I thought was important to me.
However they all are amazing testimony to how far these cameras have come in the last few years. In size and in picture quality. :D

Thanks for saying what I believe many of us think. Most people in the market for this type of camera are probably unsophisiticated, point & shoot types. My buddies that are photophiles would never buy a subcompact camera.

So at the end of the day, I'm sure the pic quality is pretty decent in most all cameras. It comes down to functionality (and I practically only use auto mode), price, warranty, colour...

But then to be fair, most people look at the salesman and take pretty much whatever he'll recommend... the rest read these posts! :p

I still have the Sd300 with me on loan for a week already, and am very hesitant to send it back...should I wait? Should I wait till next year when I'm able to check out the Panasonic FX7 or should I dive in and buy this? Can't decide.

I too have tried all sorts of shots and I couldn't find what all are saying about the not so good pix quality? Can't find it!! Why would I use a tripod for a camera this size? nope!! no tripod for me, I don't even care to bring a tripod for my videocamera, I would look silly putting a mini camera like this on a tripod hehehe :p

Well I've now taken another more than 100 pictures in all different situations with the SD300 and NOONE could take this camerea away from me now.
The S400 is going up on Ebay.(Why does this make me feel so bad,- it's only a camera).

:p

My other camera is a Nikon FA SLR, with a good selection of lenses, ...which is collecting dust because I've been having so much fun with my little elfs.

Remember: Even the best Camera is of no value when you don't have it with you.....No reason ever not to have a camera, like the SD300, with you all the time. :D

Skip,

I had pretty decent results with my T1 and the lack of an optical viewfinder didn't really bother me, especially for the the situations where I had planned to use the T1. However, I find myself looking at a replacement after recently giving it to my brother. I have the SD300/200 siblings, along with the FX-7, among my list of 'to tries'. While I don't expect top quality images from these ultra-compacts, I wonder if you or anyone have been able to make first hand comparison photos from the Sony T series and the new Canon SDs.

Thanks,
Dave
