With the new Nikon DSLR coming soon, does it mean that the D70 is likely to be reduced in price? And if the D70 is reduced will the D50 also become cheaper?

I'm planning to buy a D50, so should i wait 3 weeks or will it take some time for any price reductions to happen?

Thanks

Well based on what we know right now about the new Nikon... which is zilch... I'd say that it's directly related to the mating patterns of the Asian Giant Panda. But then... I like Pandas.

1. We don't know anything about what it will be other than 10.2 MP and black with a red triangle on it.
2. It will be presented in about 2 weeks from this post.
3. Pandas are cool. Anyone else watch/read Ranma 1/2?

It could replace the D70s. It could be in the neighborhood of the D200. It could be something completely different. If it's replaces the D70s... then of course everything will shift down. But basing decisions on knowing nothing is silly. If you have to have a camera now... you can find good deals on the D50 right now... and it will have less effect on the D50, I'm guessing, than the D70s. If you can wait a couple of weeks... go for it, that's what I'm doing... then you can make a more educated decision. But really... there will always be something new. It just happens that this might directly affect the camera I was looking at (the D70s) so I'm opting for the wait and see method. Caveat emptor. ;)

But if nothing else...

remember...

Pandas are cool.

I was thinking about this too. I'm planning to get a D50, but if the D70/s comes down in price significantly, it might be worthwhile getting that. The only thing is, while the D70 has more features than the D50, the D50 has apparently had a few improvements made to it since the older D70 - it's noticeably less noisy in DPReview's tests. Still, I could always pick up a cheaper D50...

Hmm, I don't know. I myself won't be buying soon, anyway, so I have nothing to lose by waiting.

The price difference between a D50 ($550) and a D70 ($650) is just $100. I doubt that you will see anything more than a $50 price drop to either of those, if at all.

As a follow-on to Rex's comment: Nikon has already depleted the D70s stock, well ahead of the new camera (started about 8 months ago when they dropped the price to within $100 of the D50).

Nice looking camera but I think my D50 will do me for a while yet.
In actual fact things that would sway me are the number of focus areas and internal stuf like that rather than just the physical looks. I'm glad it has SD rather than CF because that will bring out thousands of "What on earth are Nikon doing" threads fro D70 owners. It should be fun to watch.

After using a Panasonic FZ20 for over a year, I just yesterday bought a D70. The price had dropped $200 from $1399 to $1189.

Why the D70 and not the D80 for me? The D70 is a proven performer...unlike the D80 which has yet to be seen let alone properly reviewed.

I'm happy with the D70...and don't regret waiting for the D80 at all.

I assume that you are in Australia or some other country outside the USA. You need to specify where you are and what actual currency you are talking about otherwise all the Americans here will have heart failure every time you mention a price. They live in some sort of consumer utopia as far as prices are concerned and don't understand that everywhere else in the world people pay considerably more for most things than they do.

I am in Canada so the price is the typical 1.5 times higher here than in the USA. Yep...it was the D70 S kit.

Yeah, it's wrong for us Americans to "assume" that people are talking about American prices when they dont specify other, but its perfectly normal for you to assume that he/she lives in "Australia or some other country"?

I guess the lesson here is to specify where you live and what form of currency your talking about and make sure youre spelling is correct, or youll here about that too!

Isnt it grand to have arrogant and pompous people on here?:(

I think that's a little below the belt.
I did say "Australia or some other country" simply because the price quoted is very similar to what you would pay in Australia but I did not assume that the poster was in Australia at all.
My comment was purely meant to help the poster and others to save confusion. If you think that was pompous and arrogant then I can't change your opinion of me but I assure you that I was actually trying to be helpful.

My sincere apologies K1W1, I thought it was a shot at my previous post and I was in a very bad mood(surgical problems) at the time of reading. I shouldnt have posted under those mental circumstances. I guess I took the "American" comment personal, again I am sorry and I hope you will accept my apologies.:o
