Confused about picture/print resolution.

I am taking pictures with my new 5 meg TZ1 at max quality – 2560x1920 pixels.

I took pictures on my old 4 meg Canon PowerShot S410 at its max quality of 1395x1029 pixels.

When I review the picture information in either Graphic Converter or Preview (I use a MAC G5), I find that the Canon pictures are shown as 300 dpi while the TZ1 pictures are only shown as 72 dpi.

Since I crop and print out pictures up to 8x10, it is my understanding that 300 dpi is the desired image resolution setting for my color inkjet printer.

I do not understand why I do not get a 300 dpi picture with my TZ1.

Will I get a higher quality print using the Canon PowerShot?

Thank you for your help

If I'm not mistaken, the DPI in printing should not be at all related to the number of pixels the picture is taken at. When it comes time to print, the printer will automatically scale down (or up) the pictures from the camera to the desired DPI. Try changing the settings in the program or try printing from another program. Also check the settings in the printer software itself. You may have unknowingly created a printer setting profile specifically for the Canon that you will need to recreate for the Panasonic.

This is hard to explain ....dpi means nothing until you print.....

http://www.ekdahl.org/test_dpi/test2dpi.htm

You need to adjust the way you crop ...or change the the resolution in your Photo editor or use a program to down load the photo at whatever dpi you wish.

There are more pixels in the tz1 photo you just need to adjust the way you deal with them.

If you want to keep doing it your way either crop by pixels say 2000 X 2500 which would give you a 8 X10 at 250dpi or change the preference in your photo editor to display at 300 dpi if thats what you want, it will not change the way you view the photo but the rulers in the Photo editor will change.

I told you its hard to explain....the only thing that changes is the way you have been doing it will not work without a change somewhere.

The way a photo is downloaded is contained in the exif and while most cameras use 72dpi Canon uses 300.
I use downloader pro to download photos and it includes a plugin to let me pick the resolution... but I leave it at 72 because I am accustom to using that size in the PS.

If Jeff Keller weren't on vacation, he'd have terminated one of your threads on this very same subject. Once is enough here, it'll get a response wherever you put it. So only post it once.

Well I am wide awake now...and while what said is correct or near correct anyway... but you have me confused with the size you stated for a 4mp camera ....a 4mp camera should be about 2300 X 1700 pixels.

Maybe this will help you understand
