That is a good question actually.

in the manual it only states that "prevents camera shake and maintains the subjects true color when shooting under florescent or tungsten lighting. the exposure is regulated so as to avoid the use of flash as much as possible."

i'm guessing it will up the exposure and iso values as much as possible before it resorts to using the flash". you can not use the auto-focus lock in that mode which is kind of annoying.

if you already had the manual, then i probably should shut up. hope that helped.

thanks for the response. I don't have the manual or the camera yet, so I appreciate your thoughts. I am hoping that your conclusions were correct, I'm not keen on point and shoot flash. I called Canon but they weren't able to help, I even asked for an email of one of the product team but that didn't work either. My other option is to get an S70 and simply program the custom setting to a high ISO, no flash and tungsten white balance.

before you get an s70, it is also easy to either

A. leave the sd200/300 in indoor and turn the flash off.

b. set the sd200/300 to "manual" leave the flash off, set the iso to 400 and bump up the exposure a bit.

I was hoping for a "one-button" solution for my wife. The custom setting is nice because the settings "stick" when the camera is shut down (I think?). I like the idea of the variety of picture modes with the SD300 (indoor, sports etc) but it would benefit the camera manufacturers if they let us in on the secret settings.

There is a lot that I like about the SD300, so it still may be the answer. Anyone have any email addresses of Canon folks that might have insight to the indoor mode?

I purchased an Olympus 300 for her, it's tiny and convenient but the indoor quality isn't up to par. My kids have S30's and they perform much better, but the camera is a bit larger.

thanks again,
