I love my Sony camera but when I turned it on yesterday I could not see anything through the viewfinder or LCD. It looks as if I still have my lens cap on. I can change settings or format. I have re-set and I have removed and replaced my battery but still cannot see through lens. All settings appear to be okay. I even snapped a photo anyway but nothing there. Can someone tell me what to do? If the camera needs repair do I have to send it to Sony? Is that expensive?

Could possibly be a CCD problem. If so, they will fix it for free. If not, they have a $211 flat rate to fix. Go here to check it out http://eservice.sony.com/webrma/web/index.do?ref=http%253A//sony.com/index.php

FYI, my camera started shifting colors. Sent it in and they repaired for free. Used it for about 100 more shots, then I started getting exposure problems while zooming. I really love this camera, but I am not gonna bother to fix this time. Don't want to risk it dying again when I need it.

Thanks Steve. I read about the class action suit against Sony and my F717 is named in that suit. I did not quite understand it. What should I do or how can I contact Sony to see if they will fix it free. I have already replaced the camera with a Nikon but would like to have it fixed if not too expensive. Can you advise?
