Hi Guys,
i read all the various comments about these three cameras, D50, D70s and the Cannon Rebel XT
I understand the basic differences and i know this topic has been done to death. The problem (opportunity!) is that now on line all three cameras with the "travel" or "range" Pack trade with in $20 of each other. So when most reviews and disccusions were posted the price diffference was a decising factor, now its not
They all come with 18-55, 55-200 lenses plus case and tripod.
So with out arguing about cheap internet dealers selling grey market product, which one is now the best buy. is 529, 549 and 569 for the D50, D70, and canon respectively.
The only factor is i need to trigger studio lights, i dont mind using a cable so if all three have the fitting then i dont need the D70's wireless control.
Also, i can use photo shop a little so provided teh D70 does not need too much adjustment (unlike the D1) Then i guess i would be cool with that.
i travel alot so size is a factor.
but most importantly i want to be able to create stunning photos with not too much photo shoping. but at the same time i want a compact camera that can act as my main studio camera.
anythoughts now price is not in the picture. cheers.
Im after the one that is the least headeach/best picture ratio!
My other lense is a 17-35 f/2.8 from the 35mm days. its still a great lense although i struggled with it on a D1 i had on loan for a while
so lets open up this can of worms again, cheers
My cr
If that is the D70s, will you please post a link to the D70s at $549.00.

Assuming that is a Nikon lens then the Canon will be out of the picture price wise because you will have to factor purchasing a new Canon compatible lens to replace this one.

The 18-55 and 55-200 lenses you mention are not worth a lot, especially the Nikkor 55-200. They are cheap and cheerful lenses, built cheaply and the 55-200 Nikkor doesn't impress at 200mm. The Canon 55-200 performs a bit better, but it still is not built well and the manula focus ring is the front of the lens assembly, feels cheap. So I would not go for any of these kits unless they are as cheap as the body only option. I would try to find a nice lens or two for not TOO much instead.
That 17-35 f2,8 Nikkor is nice, I would opt for the Nikon D50 if I owned that lens.

I can't help much with the D50/D70s comparison, but I just went through the buying process myself and opted for Nikon over Canon based on how they feel. The Rebel looked good on paper, but when I held it in my hand and then held the D50 and D70s, it was clear to me that I would enjoy using a Nikon more. The Rebel is a smaller camera, so whereas the Nikons felt balanced and the hand grip filled my hand nicely, the Rebel seemed a little too small. This is obviously a matter of personal taste, but it can make a big difference in how you will feel about using the camera every time you pick it up. Don't overlook this important factor among the slew of technical data that get thrown out when comparing cameras.

I agree with Peterden. If you go to the store and hold those cameras in your hand you'll discard the RebelXT because it feels worse than the Nikons.
At least for me (big hands!!) the Canon felt like little fragile and I was not comfortable with its grip at all. Try them out at the closest store.
Nikons seem more robust, I travel a lot too and take my D50 everywhere.
Go for the camera body (is it available for cheap prices too ?) and invest on a good lens, you'll never regret as I did buying the kit lens.;)

Having looked at the d50 and the Rebel, I also felt the d50 felt much better in my hands (again, this is personal preference). I also think the display on the Nikon is easier to read both in bright daylight and in the store.
I'm also interested in the link for the d50 at only $529, that is by far the cheapest I've seen for a new body, let alone with two lenses.

This lens makes the Canon vs. Nikon a choice a no brainer. This is a fantastic lens, and it would go to waste if you switched unless you decided to sell it.
My advice actually would be to wait for the D80 and buy it body only. With the 17-35, I see no reason to go for a kit lens which will pale in comparison to the nice glass you have. Why D80? It's more fully featured than the D50/D70s, and I think you'll appreciate that the viewfinder is much more film-like than those on the other cameras. You'll also appreciate the more compact size of the D80 if the D70s was ever on your mind.
If the D80 isn't an option for you, I would take the D50 over the D70s, even with the minute $20 difference.

Anyone else buying that these cameras can actually be purchased at these prices? I'm betting the dealer either is on this list or should be added.

well between the D70s and the D50 there are two difference
Metering and AF mode are buried in a menu in the D50, while in the D70s can be changed via the button (AF button and metering button) this helps you to save a lot of time by not having to go into the menut to change them! also the D50 doesnt has a depth of field preview.
The D70s iso has the ability to change the ISO in 1/3 stops steps, while the D50 has it in 1 full stop steps.
But the D50 is a great camera, solid body, fast response, a good number of features, great image quality and nice noise reduction system!
As for the rebel xt It is a good camera with great image quality and sports some nice features, but the body is such a turn down :( . I prefered the original digital rebel body :P
the difference between 8 and 6 megapixel is small so dont be concerned about this
If the price is almost the same I would go with the D70s
Be careful of the prices on some internet stores as they offer low prices and then do switch and bait, or push you accs.
Good places with fair prices are
www.buydig.com
www.bhphotovideo.com
www.keh.com (this is specially good for used equipment)
this sites are 0% scams, and have the BBB seal of aproval (better bureau bussines) and great ratings on bizrate.com too :D
Good luck and enjoy your camera

I agree with Rex. That 17-35 f2.8 is a very good lens, and buying something comparable on Nikon or Canon will cost you over 1000$. So forget about a Canon DSLR unless you have good reasons to want one.
I'd either go for the D50 (very good image quality) or the D80 (in everything better than the D70s) for the higher resolution.
