Purchased DSC-W5 14 months ago. It has worked fine until this evening. Took 10-15 images of the kids, switched selector to review mode - checked a few of the images - shut camera off and handed it to my wife. She turned it back on to review images - worked fine - then switched modes to the "green" camera icon (which the mode we normally use). The lens extended - then the camera shut off. Thinking the batteries died - we replaced them with fully charged rechargables - pressed the power button - the green light comes on - Cyber Shot splash screen comes on, "access" appears, lens extends - then camera shuts off. This happens in all the other modes except "review"

While in review mode - we can review images, access all the menus and change. Have re-initalized camera - no change - camera only comes on and stays on in review mode.

Any help is most appreciated - thank you.

I used to own a W1. I believe there is a re-set
function, like a small button you press with a
paper clip, located on the bottom, near the
tripod screw.. Should be in the owner's manual.

Closest the W-5 has is "initialize" on the set up 1 menu. Which I have done. The camera reboots and the screen to set the camera date/time appears. But still same problem as before.

Thank for the possible solution.

It would appear that something is impeding the
deployment of the lenses extension, as that is
the message you will get if the lens encounters
something as it is being extended.

Looks like a problem for the Sony service people.
