And at this point i just want to know what it is already and how much its gonna cost. personally im hoping its just gonna be inbetween the D70s and the D200 but thats just me. i just wanted to know if anyone had anyother thoughts on that. if you wanna see the add just check out http://www.nikon.ca and the add will show up. also if anyones got any inside info on this camera it would be great to hear about it. thanks,:D

The new camera will replace the D70(s). My guess is $999 (body).

I'm betting that it will look virtually the same as the D70s and keeping the good stuff while improving picture quality. Should be interesting.;)

And if you are thinking about buying one in 18 days you are as deluded as all the Wallies over at DPReview who are working themselves into a lather over the release.
In 18 days there will be an announcement. The announcement will say that the new camera will be called a Dxx and the specs will be these and the availablity will be some time in the future (maybe Fall 2006?).
It will be months before anybody will actually be able to buy one of these even if they want to.
All this is is a marketing campaign designed to take the focus away from the new Sony and stop people from going out and buying that camera long enough for Nikon to get something new on the shelves.

Actually, keeping with Nikon's great habit of "improving and offering at a lower price," I wouldn't be surprised to see the new body offered at the current $899 price point at which the D70s was introduced or even $799 . Sounds crazy, but that's exactly what Nikon's done the past few product launches.

I have my money saved for a D200, but I am going to wait 18 days to see what this new mystery camera is all about! I am really curious to see if it will be better than the D200!!

I'm in the market for a camera. I want to see how this will compare to the Canon 30D. Could it be enough to sway me over to Nikon?

Depends on what lens' you have. If your starting from scratch with no lens', the 30D is still one of the best camera's to get under $2000! If Nikon makes this Mystery DSLR better specs than the 30D then I would think that it will directly compete with the D200...heck if it's a 10.2 mp DSLR priced under $1000 maybe the D200 to loose sales or drop in price... and I save some coin:) :) :) ...who knows.... 17 days to go!

If this is the D70 replacement, I cant see it being TOO close in spec to the D200. Probably a sensor upgrade, LCD upgrade, but leaving everything else the same. Maybe a bump to the CAM1000 sensor... I dunno. I wonder if the guy from Nikon will actually tell me anything if I give him a call... likely not.

I'm also looking into the D200 and at this point im pretty set on getting it. I just wonder if this new Nikon will change my mind and mabey i can save some money
(if it is replacing the D70s) but at this point im defently waiting before i go out and buy a D200. I dont know about anyone else but Nikons defently done a good job of catching my attention.

haven't heard of this camera until the link in the first post. It does look a lot like the D70. Nikon will have to keep up with Sony's A100 which is gonna 10.2mp and lower cost that the D200, but the Alpha isn't nearly as good a quality and performance as the D200. If this new camera is better than the D200 then i am going to save up for that, but I highly doubt it being better, since Nikon won't want to lose sales from a really good high quality performance camera. They probably just want to get a new camera that is just as good as the Sony Alpha.

I emailed my Nikon rep, but since it is sunday, I likely wont hear back until tomorrow. I suspect he's going to tell me that I have to wait until the release day, and if he does say anything it will probably be on the basis that I dont share with others... but we'll see.

Funny thing is, I just skipped the animation at least half a dozen times in the last week because intros generally just annoy me. Now I have to wait with great patience to see what it is!

Zac, the D200 is an awesome bit of kit. I can unreservedly recommend it to you. I've had mine since the first week of january and love it to bits. Get the MBD200 and an extrab battery!

I'm sure many of us have to live with in a certain budget controlled by both ourselves and our spouses. With 18 days left, now is the time to put our collective heads together and come up with reasons why we need to upgrade to the new camera.

Saying, "Honey, it looks so cool and makes me feel like a real man.." just won't cut it in most families.

Putting your foot down and telling her you're going to get this camera or worse yet, ordering the camera and not discussing it first, are two sure fire ways to get you sleeping on the couch. If you do this wrong you may have to reciprocate and let her get new window treatments or worse, go with her to more Emma Thompson movies.

I think getting the new camera requires realistic-sounding reasons i.e., "it's water resistant, has three colored histograms and shoots 5 frames per second! Now I can shoot pictures of Mathieu's soccer in the rain and still get accurate exposures with out missing a play!"

I am also thinking of things to sell that won't negatively affect me or my family. Having a financial plan which doesn't interfere too much with family finances is probably the best way to achieve your desired goal. If you can explain to her how you plan on selling your current SLR and collect recyclable aluminum cans on the weekend, you will show her how serious you are about getting this new technological marvel and your aquisition will be painless to her and the kids, (except for the hours walking on the side of the road picking up cans).

If any one else has ideas on how to upgrade and still keep a happy marriage please feel free to chime in.

Bob

I had a customer today who has a D70s. He said he's thinking about the D200. I asked him if he needed the higherr frames per second, better sealing, and better AF module. His answer was no. Guess what I told him:

Dont buy the D200. Wait to see the new camera. If it isnt enough of an upgrade, then use the money for better glass. I suggested the 17-55 AFS DX or the 70-200 AFS VR.

No problems there. If you order the camera now you will have months to figure out any excuses before it arrives. Maybe you could come home one night in three months time and say, "You will never guess what Honey. Today a guy offered me a price I couldn't refuse on my D50 so I sold it to him. I guess I'l just have to have a look around and see what I can replace it with." (She won't need to know about the 4 auctions you have run on e-bay to get to this point).

Now I can shoot pictures of Mathieu's soccer in the rain and still get accurate exposures with out missing a play!"

We have a problem here. I do this regularly with my D50 and SHMBO has seen the photos to prove it.

i know this sounds kind of dumb... but i just recently watched the add and i noticed the camera had a silver shutter release button.... looking at nikons current & previous cameras the d50 has a silver one along with the d70 (D70s doesnt have a silver one) now the D200 and the highend models that nikon makes doesnot have a silver shutterrelease button but a black one. i aslo noticed the add said "A new ADDITION to nikons D-SLR lineup" or somthing like that. so this camera defnetly wont replace anything which is kind of interesting. im guessing its going to be inbetween the D70s and the D200. yesterday i went to don's photo and bought a D200 and at this point im trying to decide if ive made a mistake. and see if i can return the thing before its to late. i also took your advice Warin and bought the MB-D200 with an extra battery. i also ordered in a 18-200mm lens and i'm pretty excited for that to come in. if anyone has any advice that would be great.

I think silver shutter releases indicate prosumer (oe entry level) DSLR cameras to Nikon which is where this new model appears to be targeted.
As far as the word addition is concerned. "Adding" something to a lineup does not mean that you cannot "subtract" something later on or even at the same time.
Nikons marketing dept are not silly enough to say "We are going to bring out a new camera that will replace an existing one but we won't tell you what camera will be replaced". It would kill sales stone dead.

Why has the countdown been at "0" for 4 days now and they haven't released specs? WTF :(

Now it says "2" so that should mean Wednesday is the due day.
