Hi guys (girls).

A friend of mine has A75 powerhot camera and accidentaly inserted the CF card the other way. She bent a few pins but broke one of them. Repair shop quoted about 140-150 USD for replacement of the card reader. I was wondering whether it is possible to get this part and fix it/replace at home. I am not totally unexperienced with electronic - I have just never taken this particular camera apart. Any info will be appreciated.

Ive done it but its tricky, specialy if yo have never had it open before. The first time you open it it can be very overwhelming because of how compact it is. Ive taken a few apart so after time you learn where it all folds back together and what screw goes where.

Are you sure a pin is broken? sometimes they can just lay over and a mechanical pencil can be used to slip down over the pin and bend it back. I feel this is why they have changed to the SD memory. Least it is just an A75 and not a 300D

There is a guy on e-bay who repairs them regularly his e-bay name is "Darntoothysam" i think he has a website also. You can contact him maybe for the part, or for the repair.

I had a sony V1 with a cracked LCD, i got one from him for $40. shipped! he also sells digital cameras that he has repaired check into both.

Dont throw the camera out what ever you do, people buy broken cameras off e-bay. If you cant do it and feel its not worth it to fix it, just sell it as is.

BowerR64: thanks for the info. The pin is broken - I looked inside with bright light and magnifying glass. I will try to locate the spare part and if I cannot fix it - e-bay is probably the best solution.

well, sometimes the pins can get pushed in. When you get it apart you will know then whats actualy wrong. There are a few things you can do.

You can replace the whole socket or replace the camera with one that uses SD memory.

Dont you think it would of been better if they put the pins on the memory? that way if a pin gets bent all you have to do is replace the memory.

The connection that holds the pin on is very tiny but i have repaired one before. I used super glue to glue the pin back in place, then i resoldered it. I dont remove the memory ever because of this problem. Its so easy to screw up those pins.

A friend of mine decided to buy a new camera so I can play with this one. I will try to take it apart and see what is actually wrong. I also have DC with CF card (Fuji) and never had any problems. But on my camera it is quite obvious how to insert the card, on the Canon it is not so easy to tell...

i agree, i put one in backwards before also. I never pushed it in really hard to damage the unit but it would slide in either way wich i found weird. The design of the memory i dont think was canons design but it is a problem.

They had a good design with smart media i dont know why they changed when they went to CF i just hope if there is another format after SD they remember the pins didnt work.

Its gona be nice when they decide to put internal memory in the cameras. I can understand that people want unlimited storage but why cant the unit come stock with 32 megs? i mean its so small and cheap
