everyone is talking about the sigma 70-300 for the D50, but what about the quantaray 70-300 for about $160?
I've never seen a really good review of a quantaray lens. Most of the owner comments are that they are very ordinary. On the other hand there are plenty of people (including me) who own Sigma lenses and who think they offer very good value for money.
i own a Quantaray 20-90mm lens and i was disatisfied with it, images from that lens came out really soft. i wouldnt reccommend a quantaray lens. i just got the sigma 70-300mm APO DG and would strongly reccommend that lens to anyone.

The quantaray and the sigma should be the same exact lens. What you need to notice is that there's a Sigma 70-300mm and a Sigma 70-300mm APO. The APO glass is the one that people reccomend getting. You can differentiate between two by checking if the lens has a red circular line around the end of the lens. If it does, than it's the APO.

the one I see talked about comes as a package deal with a smaller lens.

I've seen this exact situation in other posts. There is one retailer that seems to be dumping these lenses. I guess if the overall deal is okay and the lens is either very very cheap or effectively free then you won't be disapointed because the lens will be worth what you paid for it.

I plan on using this camera and lens for shooting sports activities(football and wrestling plus baseball.)
I need a good but inexpensive len for a Nikon D50. I'm looking @ a package at costco that is nikon 70-300mm. or should i look at the sigma dual package?

OK, they are both probably built by Sigma, but while Sigma builds its own lens to its own specifications, it builds the Quantaray to Ritz Camera specifications. Ritz specifications call for cheaper materials to keep the price down. They don't sell it for less "just because".

I find the nikon 70-300 is ok...if you keep it at about 200mm and have plenty of light.
