I've been asked to do the photography for a budget wedding.

I'm not sure how much to ask for this. I know my focussing issues with the XT all seem to vanish when I put a flash on the camera though. So that's (fortunately) not going to be an issue.

I have an idea of the sort of photos required. It'll be a 3-hour job with photos of the bride getting dressed, of the formals and the reception.

I don't think you should be doing it. You self-admittedly don't even know what all the buttons are for.

And no AA batteries. You will never be able to do it since you will not have a charged battry for your XT, let alone 2 charged batteries....

A man of experience, myself. I've paid two wedding photogs to shoot images for the weddings of my two daughters, on the order of $2,000 to $5,000, and that was 10 years ago. But the results didn't come back in a pile of prints, they came back in the form of first proofs, then after proof approval and selection, bound albums, very fancy. If yours is a "budget" affair, fine, but look into the costs of producing these important extras before committing to your fee. Also, the best photogs do not seem to be present, and don't make it seem like they're running the affair. Our first daughter's photog lined up the nice shots beforehand in good lighting conditions, so that the guests didn't have to fidget and wait for an hour after the wedding to meet the bride & groom.

Rhys, you only get one chance at a wedding to get things right, or wrong. If you have doubts about your own camera's ability to focus, better resolve those issues before the date. Shooting weddings is an awesome responsibility.

How is your focusing without flash AND where do you focus on the mirror shot?

Do you have a backup camera in case the main one fails?

Do they want an album or just a CD or prints?

Have you done a wedding before Rhys?

The wedding is (I believe) set for June next year. Better not be this August because I'm expecting an invitation to a wedding in Riga (Latvia). Then there's another in Mexico City in September that I might attend. Both are friends - should give me plenty practice :D

As regards focussing, the XT cannot focus accurately without an AF assist lamp. As soon as the 420EX with its AF assist is mounted, focussing is instant, predictable and accurate. It beats me why Canon didn't add an AF assist lamp to any of their cameras. I do know though that if my photography gets more serious I'll be dumping this Canon toy in favour of a Nikon D200. If I can get hold of a Fuji S3 Pro to check out then I could end up going for that. This no AF assist lamp nonsense is really getting on my wick.

Yeah, lets disregard everything everyone always says about 3rd party lenses without a fast more accurate USM motor that just makes AF a lot more precise, especially in low light. Have fun with your Tamron lenses and never take anything anyone ever says serious :p.

And have fun with the heavy D200 with even more buttons with even more confusing ideas... and with your manual fucussing lenses from the early 80s. That will work like a charm I am sure.
