View Full Version : Make your Own ND Filter?

I have currently just bought a sony h5, and was somewhat baffled at how hard it was to get a correct and also aesthetically pleasing shot. Now I am actually starting to get the hang of it, and after my frustration, I am now pleased at how good the camera is and how fun it is to shoot pics. But my question is, I have been looking in Neutral density filters. One thing that caught my attention was the use of sunglasses to mimic the effect of ND filters, and I was wondering; has anybody thought of just buying a Uv filter and cutting out a grey piece of cellophane that fits between the filter and the adapter as a cheap way to "make" a ND filter? If so, how does it work? Obviously, there will be tradeoffs, (none that I can name since I am a newb, but I'm pretty sure there will be trade-offs, as going cheap always does)

optical clarity and color casts might be problems.
If you took a piece of opaque black plastic and drilled a few dozen holes in it, that might work.
