View Full Version : External flash for Fuji S7000
Hi everyone,
1. Do somebody has experience with Fuji S7000 using external flash? How is the quality of the images? What are the limitations. Which brands of flash are compatible with S7000?
2. Which quality is better: 6 MP image that is made by S7000 using Normal compression or 4 MP image that is made by S5100 using Fine compression.
Thanks.

I'd exercise extreme caution in selecting and using an external flash for the S7000.
Although the camera's manual says "Ordinary flash units can be used..." (p.65), it seems this may not be true at all. Not by a long shot!
I recently used an old external flash unit on my S7000 (originally for a 35mm SLR), and I may have inadvertently "fried" the camera's sync circuitry. Strange, considering the S7000 has one of the highest tolerances for external flash units.
Although my camera still works fine, I noticed that it no longer responds/works if fitted with an external flash unit. Luckily, nothing else seems affected
I read that some Vivitars work well with the S7000. Still, I'd be very careful if I were you folks.

I have a Fuji s7000 and am using a Sunpak auto 383 flash gun but was advised by camera store to use a voltage regulated hot shoe adapter (Nikon as-15)and a pc cord from the adapter to the flash gun. This is supposed to keep from frying any of the electronics. It is working well on manual and I have found works best in program mode. What I like best is with this powerful flash gun I can bounce light off of light colored cilings. Another option is use the internal flash to shoot directly into subject and use any external flash with a peanut sensor and bounce flash off ceilings. It really lights up a room. You have to get a feel for this. The remote flash has to be located so that the sensor can see the internal flash. I think you can buy external flash guns with a sensor on them. Hope this helps.

I too am looking for a flash to buy and found this on the Fuji technical Help Site. www.fujifilm.co.uk. I just haven't a clue which flash guns fulfil these requirements, so if anyone can come up with a list, it would be just great.
What flashgun should I use with my FinePix S602, 6900, FP4900, S7000 or S20pro?
There is not a specific flashgun that we can recommend for use with any of these models. They do not need a dedicated flash and any non-dedicated hot shoe flash units with a centre-pin contact can be used provided that they meet the following conditions:
Capable of setting ISO sensitivity and aperture
Capable of metering by itself
Syncro terminal with 400 voltage or less
Centre pin contact
Guide Number of at least 24

If you want the flash on the camera make sure to get a thyristor controlled flash (like the Vivitar 283, inexpensive on ebay), but make damn sure you don't have a high voltage model to fry your camera. Better to use a voltage reg like the other post suggested.
One way to use an external flash off the camera, is to use a small, cheap flash on the camera, with a digital slave attached to an old vivitar 283 off the camera. Off camera flash gives better control over face shadows. Less dear-in-headlights look. Bounce flash easier this way also.
The camera flash should have an adjustable swivel to allow it to face out and back so it just sets off the slave 283. Set the S7000 on manual and put the speed at 500, then adj the f opening as needed.
Alternatively, you can get a coiled extension cord and an adapter for the camera, so you can hand hold a flash off the camera.
Good luck.

Just bought a Fuji S 9000 and can't find a flash unit for it.I'm thinking now that I should not have purchased a Fuji.

hi there, I'm new here to this board and have a fuji s7000 but would like to buy a good external flash that I can later use in conjunction with a canon dslr that I will be purchasing later in the year? any further info as to what units are good would be greatly appreciated! I am currently considering the Metz 44 AF-4 with a voltage regulated hot shoe adapter to prevent frying the camera.... do you reckon this would work?
thanks for advice!

As the Fuji S7000/S9000 has a single pin non-proprietary hot shoe, you'll need an external flash with what's called "auto-thyristor" technology. What that means is the flash has its own sensor for determining and achieving proper exposure for a given ISO and aperture. You match the aperture and ISO on the camera to the ISO and aperture on the flash and shoot away.
