Tonight (July 11th) here in New York we had a clear, full harvest moon. It was fairly incredible and a good excuse to whip out my TZ1 so here's an album I took (http://picasaweb.google.com/nrbelex/HarvestMoonNightShots). For the good shots of the moon (that was its natural color) I used spot metering on the center, no OIS because I was on a tripod and a 2 second delay. I didn't do anything else special. A couple of shots are in there just to show the time of day. It was pitch black (11 pm) but the shots of scenery taken with starry night mode at different exposure lengths (see the EXIF data on the page) can be adjusted to look like pure, natural daylight which I find incredible.

P.S. - One of the most incredible shots is this - taken with starry sky mode for 60 seconds when it was pitch black (as dark as the photo above). This copy has been brightened from a darker original in Picasa and cleaned with Neat Image but in my opinion, it turned out fairly incredible for a shot taken in complete darkness - the original is in the album above.

I did something very similar when I got my FZ30 and I felt the same about the results.....But I do not think anyone else believed they were shot in the dark.

But I believe you.

Looks like a late night shot to me... street lights always glow neon green in late night photos... you can see the flat lighting on the ground and bright green flares from the street lights. I've been outside shooting with my F30 getting similar things ( sickly green glows like a scifi movie ;) ).

Some nice shots. I toyed with the idea of getting the TZ1 because of the zoom and OIS, but the ISO sensitivity was more important on my priority list. Glad to see that it's useable at lower light levels though, I have a friend looking into getting a compact camera with decent zoom and OIS and had thought to recommend the "tizzy". Looks like a nice camera. :)

i like the brightened night shot.. quite a camera you got there.. the harvest moon could do better though. next time try aperture f5 or a lil higher.. and maybe a faster shutter speed. you'll get a sharper and clearer picture but it will still be orangey colour. ;)

Well, since we are posting moon shots, I'll include one I took on July 6. This was with a tripod, but no other "special" arrangements. When I set up, it was to take some skyline shots, and I just happened to see that the moon was up (it was about 7:30 pm).

I am posting this only because its a testament to the FZ30's ability to take sharp pictures even in ad hoc situations (and certainly NOT to my fledgling photographic skills). Is it the sharpest moon shot ever? No. But for a quick snap, it certainly quite passable! No post processing other than a crop.

That's quite a coincidence gwhizkids, I took a very similar shot just a few days befor yours, 7/1/2006 at 7:48 PM also with a FZ30 from a tripod. This image has been cropped and had a light sharpening filter run on it, no other processing.

Your TZ1 shots are very well done, who wouldn't be impressed with this camera which seems to attract so many good photographers for it's portability then they start to see just how amazingly capable it is and we see such great examples posted here. For general phoptgraphy,it's the best I've ever owned.
