Hi,

I'm wondering what is the maximum resolution that a camera of a certain megapixel capability can take.

For example, I hae a 5 Megapixel camera that can take a resolution up to 2560x1920. Something I want to submit digital photos to requires a minimum of 2400 x 2400 dpi native resolution (even though I know pictures aren't taken in squares). They say that's equivalent to a 5.5 megapixel camera, although they suggest a better resolution. I was looking at a few 6-megapixel cameras, and was wondering how much higher resolution will that camera take. How about a 7-MP, etc.

Some typical resolutions from recent cameras

2816 x 2112 6mp

3072 x 2304 7.2mp

3136 x 2352 7.5mp

3264 x 2448 8mp

max resolution = (max picture element width x max picture element hieght)

Simple formula:

megapixels divided by (vertical x horizontal ratio)
Take the square root of that and multiply by the vertical ratio
Take the same square root and multiply by the horizontal ratio

That gives you the vertical and horizontal pixelage of the sensor.

Simple maths!
