When i looked at the S3 last it looked like a grid on the display or somthing. What is that all about?

Those GRID lines are for "thirds" compositions, where the subject matter frame is broken up into 9 squares... and not every picture is "dead center". That kind of shooting tends to make for some great yawns when you show your work to your audience.

By pulling your subject in one part of the frame or the other, you tend to add the background to make the rest of the composition draw the attention of audience. Their eyes move to find the subject... and in doing so... their is an implicit "action" involved... even if there is none. It's kind of like a good crop... you want to guide the viewer's eyes.

This tends to look like "Just a picture"... Splat! Point & Shoot... They're out there... so what? :p

This composition tends to appear a bit more interesting, right? Where are they going? (Less foreground... you feel closer... more interested... builds anticipation... subject is now in the lower third of the composition... it's more like you are telling a story...) ;)

"Point & shoot" people tend to forget this 'composition tool'... so, they built in a reminder, to help.

Anyway, these composition GRID lines can be toggled on and off by setting the "Custom Display", under the red camera icon and checking them "off" or "on"... with the set button...

OR... by toggling the "DISP" button on the back of the body.

I recently got to play around with an S3, and I absolutely loved this feature. I own an S2, and I'm hoping somone knows whether or not its possible for me to utilize the rule of thirds grid on my camera. Is there anything I can do to upgrade to this feature?

Etch it into your brain so that you "see" the lines in your head (the way most good shooters do it anyway). ;)

Well yea, but I'm what most of you would call a "newb," and I think having the real grid available for every shot is very beneficial. Should I draw the lines in with a ruler? :D I'm kidding, I'm kidding ...

What if you use a screen protector? they sell these plastic cling on LCD protectors for cell phones and other small LCD devices like cameras and stuff. Just use a paint pen or somthing and draw lines on that, then put it on your LCD. It will only be on the big display but atleast you can use it. I would think you could figure out somthing along these lines?

If I had thought of it I would have advised drawing lines on his eyeballs...but Bower's idea is much safer! :D
