View Full Version : Anyone else interested in the Sony a-100k DSLR?

I've been saving up to get a Rebel, but then this little baby caught my eye. Reading about it, I came to the conclusion that I REALLY like the image stabalization and anti dust system. Plus, it's a 10.2 megapixel camera that's only $999.99 with a lense. I'm a huge Sony product fan (both of my Point and Shoots are Sony cameras and I love them), so I may start saving up a little more money and get the a-100k.
Anyone else excited about this camera? As far as I know, in my VERY limited knowlege of DSLR's, no other camera has had such a bounty of features and still be priced below 1000 bucks. I'm not going to jump the band-wagon just yet, I want to wait until a few camera sites post reviews. I also feel it best to read a few consumer reviews as well. However, the camera looks great and sounds like the perfect camera for me. I've been aching for a DSLR with image stabalization that had more than 6.1Mpxls. Oh, and let's not mention the a-100k's 2.5 inch LCD screen with 230,000 pixels. I'm loving it so far!

Yes I was feeling the same way it looks on paper to be a great mix of features. It will be interesting to see how it turns out.

Phew those threads took a while to read. Good discussion though thanks Don for the links. I had read some of the posts before in a hit & miss way but you made it easy to go through them all. All I can say is roll on the end of July when people will be able to get their hands on some of the new cameras & there will be so much more to read for those of us who just cant make a decision. Actually I quite enjoy the research bit before a purchase.

you just might have to lug it with you!
Yeah... the SONY will definitely be the one to watch, next month.
You are welcome. :D

Thanks Don, very interesting links. I had been looking for a place to get some real information on the camera, and none of the websites I visited seemed to give such a detailed preview.
It's going to be a very long wait, I definately won't get an A-100k when it first comes out. Like I said, I want to wait for a few professional and consumer reviews (which will take about a month or two). The thing that worries me about this camera is the fact that high ISO pictures might be crappy, and the fact that many of the better lenses are VERY pricey. This will be my first digital camera, so I supposed I'm planning on buying into this system. But with glass that expensive, I'm not sure I can afford to buy anything but one or two decent lenses.
The best thing about this camera (in my opinion) is the image stabilization that's within the body, not the lense. Ofcourse, that's nigh useless if the camera sucks at higher ISO.

Unfortunatly, Canon's high ISO is incredible. It really is leaps above everyone else so it's hard pressed to match it.
That being said, high ISO is for very specific uses and people should remember that. ISO 1600 is very usable on the *ist DS, D200 and presumably the Sony alpha with some noise processing and print size thinking.
@ 300 DPI your 10 megapixel shot is 8.5X13 inch print. @ 240 dpi (nikon default) it's a 11X17 nearly.
If your shooting natural light usually or sports where you need F2.8 + ISO 1600 regularly I'd say without a doubt the alpha will disapoint.
I've honestly had more issue looking at how CLEAN iso 100/200/400 is versus how noisy higher ISO's are. The D50 is a prime example of never getting to "Canon clean" ISO 100/200's where as the D200 does get as close to "Canon pure" @ ISO 100 as I've seen any non canon come.

Definitely. The Sony A100 looks splendid. Im still waiting for a review at dpreview.com on this camera to see how it compares to the Canon Rebel XT 350D and the D50.
People have been posting a lot of assumptions on this thread, in my opinion. Also, because the majority is more favourable for Canon, atleast that is what they are using.
I'm more into hard facts. I need reviews and thats what I will wait for. First impression on the A100 so far, looks good.
I'm not so sold on the high-ISO of the Canons.
I'd rather stick the camera on a tripod and use 100ASA.

Good luck with that in soccer. Or any other sport. Or even with anything moving.

Looks like a nice replacement for the KM 5D. I'm just waiting for Sony's 7D replacement. :D

It's a very interesting camera, and a great combo of features. I don't like the lack of a status LCD, though.
I'm wondering what other kinds of lenses Sony has up their sleeve. I can't help but wonder if they'll have any type of AF-S/USM style lenses to bring into the mix for even more healthy competition. They do like to throw their money into new ventures though, that's for sure.

I have no interest at all in soccer of any variety.

Just for "Rhys", SOCCER has been eliminated from the planet... due only to his lack of interest. All other opinion is... futile!

Any further discussion regarding this rather drastic action can be taken up at Fotokina, in Cologne, Germany, next September.
Thank you for your attention. Geez...

So how well will the A100 adapt with the legacy KM lenses? Hooking it up to the mount is one thing, making them both work well together to produce good photos is another. I suspect a majority of the new A100 owners will buy the CZ/Cosina lenses.

Does anyone know of a review for this camera? I would like to compare the photos and iso levels with the Canon Rebel XT 350D
