I'm no expert, but I have the D50 and I'm planning to get the Sigma 70 - 300 mm APO DG. Around $200.

For the US$300 you could get the aforementioned Sigma 70-300 APO DG AND a Nikon 50mm f1.8.
The Sigma for the kids sports (I use mine for Soccer no problems) and macro (it's not a real macro lens but for the price pretty good) and the Nikon for indoor low light and people photos.

awesome K1W1, u just turned my 1 lens for $300, to 2 lens for $300. ive been reading up on that sigma 70-300mm APO DG, and has really good reviews, so far thats #1 on my list, and that nikon 55mm 1.8 has been on my list. so hopefully i can grab both of those lenses.

so does everyone recommend the sigma 70-300mm APO DG lens? ive seen and read about the lens and i know it will be good for me, just wanna make sure if its as good as u all say it is? if so i will be purchasing this lens as soon as i see it is highly recommended for a non expensive lens.

It's very good value for money but it is not by any means a Pro lens. If you accept that you have only spent $200 on it then you will understand that it won't compare with a $2000 lens.
It's much better in most peoples opinion than the Nikon 70-300G lens when the light is anything less than perfect.

i know its not goin to give me the quality of a 2000 dollar lens, but like i said, i just want something decent that is pretty much gonna get me through on wat i like to take pics of, and something better than wat im using now. later in the future i will drop 1000-2000 dollars on a lens, not now.

Consider a used Nikkor 80-200 2.8 from ebay. I got one for $300. Definitely a HEAVY lens...but fast. You mentioned sports, so you'll probably want something fast.

Nikon 50mm 1.8 for portraits. Excellent lens.
