More useless crap with the XT + 70-200 f/2.8 + 1.5x TC. Just cuz I can.

Just out of curiousity does that 1.5 TC have any adverse effect on Bokeh?

LOL thanks Pete...I like the webs though! ;)
Andy it doesn't seem to. I don't really see why it would since it's just glass. I'm sorta liking it. Since it doesn't affect the minimum focus distance, I can get 1.5x closer for pseudo-macro-ish shots. Still curious about AI Servo with it though. I'll shoot some more soccer on Tuesday to find out how it really does.

Sounds good - the only thing I was wondering was that, sure its just glass, but its $87 dollar glass sitting between the camera and $1,200 worth of glass - see my point. a lot like my $80 piece of glass in the form of the 50 1.8, which didn't have the best bokeh.
Hey - not arguing here - just a question re: the performance of the kenko. Thanks for answering it. Do let us know how AI servo performs with it.

It shouldn't (and doesn't appear to) have any effect on the bokeh. The 50 f1.8 has bad bokeh because it only has 5 aperture blades. The TC doesn't change the amount of aperture blades in the lens...
Nice shots Don. I thin I'd like to see them in color, though. Looks like the light would be warm and nice (based on the low direction of the sun).

Yeah as Jamie said, bokeh is affected by the aperture blades, not the glass itself. Telecons are only responsible for sharpness and clarity (hazyness) degradation, as well as autofocus performance. I'm surprised by the quality of this Kenko though...to my eyes sharpness isn't affected much at all, and there's only a minimal amount of contrast loss...which of course can be recovered in post.
Autofocus, however, seems a bit sketchy. It likes to bounce back and forth until it hits focus...hunting but not in a way that bangs the motor around. Almost like those desk balls you can swing into each other..with focus being the middle ball that isn't moved, and focus being gradually acheived as they slow down and finally stop. It's not super super slow...but it's not L USM fast anymore either. I don't know if that makes sense to you but I can't think of a better analogy at 4AM.

Thanks Jamie. As I said above, AF seems to be the only pitfall with such a cheap TC....but I also have only tested it once in AI Servo. Even if I end up being able to use it only for still subjects, for the price I think I'll keep it.
Here are the color versions:

I like the color versions better, because it give you a sense of time to go along with the sense of place. Plus I like how the green of the foliage contrasts with the mono tones of the sundial.

I'm still partial to the B&W. Although probably for no other reason except I don't do nearly enough B&W and I'm actually happy with my conversion for once. ;)

Lesson learned re: bokeh and blades. . .
"No blades, no bows, leave your weapons here." :D
