View Full Version : I think I want to read that book too!
Odd circumstance having to do with buying "junk" from work and selling it on EBAY for a quick (1 day) profit! Nothing big, but enough for this. So I get to do what I figured I would never be able to justify - a 20D to 30D upgrade!
Dang BH isn't accepting orders today. Wierdos. The site works, why not take my order! I know it won't ship until Monday. chomp chomp chomp:D
Now I am forced to think it over for a day. Help me. Is this the right thing to do (pant)?
If you have the cash...the real question to ask is why not do it? It is what you want so go for it...

Vich...
be honest with yourself... well, lie a little... it's more, as my lady would say, "More manly... "(heh heh). ;)
It's hard to go wrong when buying a good camera body... especially if you already have a decent investment in glass. Why not hang it off something just as good? Just kinda seems natural, don't it? I know... let's ask Andy... he'll buy everything.
Picture this:

Okay, you done yet? Now... go get the BOOK!
BTW: I trimmed down the signature... just to ease up on the eyes. :) and added a website to hang my work.

I'm afraid that with the exception of a few pages - the rest of the book is nearly the same as your book Vich - Same author and everthing! ;)
I think if you are going to make this upgrade properly then it really relies on a few things. I'm no expert but here it goes: The understanding that your images won't improve with this upgrade. The one thing that stands to improve lies in operational side of things - Maybe its spot metering with help out with exposures, or maybe the little bit bigger RAW buffer is going to help you add a few images to your sequence [Big one for me - I filled my buffer a bunch tonight - I don't care if that makes me a bad photographer cause I can fill the RAW buffer - if I have CF space and I don't know exactly when the best moment to trip the shutter is during a garder toss or the B&G stuffing each others face w/cake, then I'm gonna let that baby go at 5 fps near the right time and hope that I get it - its a lot better than seeing the moment in the VF and knowing its gone.]
Maybe the larger LCD is going to make menu operations that much easier for you. . .
I don't know I just don't see how image quality wise the upgrade is going to improve your images.
a nice new lens [L] might increase image quality, or is there a focal lenght you lack???
Just want you to think about it. . . I think you're looking for opinions here to prevent buyers remorse, which ever way you go - thats all I'm hoping I can help you with.
I assisted a wedding tonight and I will say that the 30D was a great step up as far as performance is concerned vs the XT. . . but it probably wouldn't be that much better than the 20D. I had confidence tonight. . . even though I do suck, but its confidence in my camera that I hadn't had before. ;)
I didn't help did I?? ?
What lenses are in your bag again. . ?

What lenses are in your bag again. . ?Thanks for the thoughts Andy. My lenses, I lightened the sig last week.
24-105L, 50f1.4, 70-200 f4L. Those are my keepers. I may also keep the Tamron 28-75 f2.8.
I could really stand to get the Canon 10-22 (or the Tokina). But I'm still inclined to just get the upgrade.
It was sort of free, dropped in my lap unexpectedly, money - and all the other finances were already covered. I'm feeling real smart about earning it so decided to completly blow it on photography.
Buyer's remorse? I don't think I'll get that over a $500 purchase. A house or car, or even $3K 5D purchase. It's more a matter of still not covering my WA range when I know I could be.
Blah blah. I've just closed my eyes and stepped off the cliff.
Here's my POTN listing (http://photography-on-the.net/forum/showthread.php?p=1703258#post1703258). See what you think.
DonSchap and JTL: Thanks for the words of wisdom. I'm thinking right along those lines. It's what I want so I'm getting it. I'm not a big WA shooter anyway (but then, I've never created the opportunity).
Well, I sold my 20D. Took 14 hours and 1 minor price drop. Man, those FM boards go quick. A post only lasts about 30 minutes on page 1. But finally had 2 people wanting it as the 2nd graciously bowed out to the first.
BUT HE'S DRIVING TO GET IT TODAY! I haven't even placed my 30D order yet. So, I figure on getting it by Friday. Time for a little extra postage money ahe? .... :p

Thanks. Know the feeling, chomp chomp. It's dangerous!
Problem is, if you fall into the $600 it would take to upgrade, there's always some other expense that seems more sensible. In the end, it always comes down to making a seemingly wastful expendeture.

Yeah. If I could afford to sell just one body, and upgrade to the 30D with an XT as backup, that'd be fine. I just seriously flat out do NOT have the cash. I'd have to sell both to get just one body at this point, and I still wouldnt have backup batteries that I'd need. And I like having the dual juice from a grip...
I'll "suffer" with the lowlies for awhile. It'd also be nice if I could afford 2 30Ds and just use the XTs as "beaters"....you know...the filthy work.

You seem like the kind of guy who gets what you really wish for (visual, close eyes, wish for winning lotto ...) you know what I mean Oh man of action.
I can tell you, if I ever accomplish a decision ... to really go after making serious side money through photography (weddings, portriats, etc), and therefore will be a lot more likely to do the steps towards that end, I will be setting my sights on a 5D + 30D, or whatever is equiv, + a lens collection as stellar as yours.
Yeah, I would think that if I had several paid portriat sessions under my belt and had a wedding to do, I'd spring for another 30D (or just go straight to the 5D). Filthy work - like desert wind or race tracks - I'd probably just clean my 30D more often.
Like you said, you really can't do paid 1-time-only events with just 1 body.

That was quick Vich - good for you! I'm a little confused: did you sell your gear on FM or POTN?

Decided Saturday afternoon, got time Saturday night to post an ad on both POTN and FM, nothing by morning so reduced price slightly, got 2 buyers within an hour. Never a peep on POTN.
Either way, didn't want to prolog it, but did not expect it to actually be gone today (he lives close by). :( But gotta take the offers as they come.
Congrats, Vich...wait'll you get a load of that LCD!
Caaaaan't wait! Really strained over that tiny 20D thumbnail.
The 30D just seems to me a fixed and modernized 20D. I just hate using something in need of fixing and updating - just can't afford the 5D. To quote 2001 II; I think this'll be the beginning of something wonderful. :)
