I heard a story of someone buying a Nikon D50 from a not so well known dealer, and when they got it, they found out it was a foreign model. Do they indead make a foreign version of the D50, and should I be worrying about this when I go to buy one?

Thanks

I don't know about a foreign model and if it's different... it's not uncommon to have slightly different releases of hardware in different locations... or to have the same hardware and simply change the name and model number.

The biggest problem you'd have, assuming it's actually genuine Nikon, would be if you had warranty service. You might run into problems because the hardware isn't covered by being foreign model. I'd look into it at Nikon's site and find out if it's really worrying you.

Best to just make sure you're dealing with a reputable reseller though. If you buy from a non-authorized reseller and have a problem with the unit... Nikon might not honor the warranty simply because they weren't an authorized reseller... even though it was a genuine product.

caveat emptor

If you're buying from a reputable dealier, no problem. From a "not-so-well-known dealer"? that depends. I don't know whether there even is a different version for different markets, but even if there is, it probably isn't any different in terms of functions. The main thing to worry about would be the language of menus and the warranty. Occasionally (not often), Japanese manufacturers will make a model only for home shores, and provide it only with Japanese menus. Likewise, some J manufacturers have different local (Japan only) and international (the rest) warranties.
Best way to be sure? Pay a bit extra and buy from a well-known dealer.
