I've just returned from Le Mans and discovered that on my FZ20 (1 year old) the LCD locks when you're trying to pan with an object  . It's therefore impossible to track an object and come out with a sharp object over a blurry background unless you're very lucky!!!
Has there been a software update to this? How can I overcome this?
I've checked the panasonic forum for panning but there doesn't seem to be any information regarding this issue. If anyone can help...:)

I think my FZ15 had the same feature. The issue is that the screen freezes to "speed up" AF. Use another AF mode, you may get improvement.

Try using center focus or spot focus.

There is no update to the EVF/LCD lag.....but the use of a Red Dot sight should allow you to get the type of shot you are looking for.
The sight will allow you to track the car, while panning mode should give you the background your after.
If you do not wish to use a sight it seems to me the EVF works better than the LCD, which seems about useless to me.

cheers chaps
will give your comments a try this weekend. I hadn't appreciated that it might be something causing a delay - i'm hoping that the FZ20 does actually stay live when you're panning so you can track an object using either the LCD or EVF...

It does not work as you wish......check into using a Red dot sight as others do for tracking birds....it will work the same for autos.

One observation: you have to lead your subject (as in hunting) and like all side to side motion events, have a complete follow through: that is: lock on the target and continue your swinging motion even after the taget has moved on.
Even plainer: don't stop your swing the moment you press the shutter; makes for unsharp images.
