View Full Version : Which ones to keep
hello,
now that as digital photographers, we can shoot till our cards are full and then some, the amount of images we can get can build up very quickly
im running out of space on my HDD
and just wanted to know how do you decide which of your photos to keep
obviously the shockers are first to go
but what about those in between? do you keep those or do you bin them?
right now im at the point of asking myself "is this worthy to put in a frame?" to decide whether it stays or goes
thoughts?
thanks for your time

If you've got a CD or DVD writer, burn the ones you're not sure about to offline disk. It might be an idea to make an index print of all the images small on one sheet to tuck in the CD case. You can then delete them off the hard disk, knowing that if in year or so's time one of the pictures turns out to be important, you can still get it back.
That's what I do, with backups of my best shots as well.

I'd have to go with what AlexMonro said. I burn everything onto cd blanks for backup and keep them labeled by date and categorized in a software catalog so I can search my archives offline from the cd. I hate throwing anything away because sooner or later you'll want it for some reason. ;)
A decent CD burner doesn't cost very much these days and CD blanks are dirt cheap and usually enough to handle a moderate photo shoot. DVD burners are coming down in price rapidly as well... and there isn't much I've had to deal with that wouldn't fit on a DVD blank. But since you're talking about 1-2 cents for a cd and about 20-40 cents for a dvd... go nuts... back up everything... why not? :)
thanks for your replies
i have a cd burner, but not a dvd burner
unless i buy them in bulk, cds still seem expensive to me (A$1)
plus im a high-school student, so money isnt exactly growing on trees for me at the moment
plus im paying off my S3
looks like ill have to make do for the moment
but yea thanks for the advice :o

I don't know what conversion rates are right now... but that seems a lot.
I buy spools of 100 cdr's at about $9.00 US per spool... so I go through them like candy. heh Buying them individually packaged in small quantities will be more, but that still sounds expensive to me. I'll take you ad your word though... can you maybe order online and get cheaper media?
I personally keep only the good pictures, which is approximatelly one in 100 or something like that. I delete all the other pics. IMHO there is no point in having pile of worthless photos on my HDD. I only keep pictures worth looking at (at least IMO :) )
