Digital Rebel XT & Canon EF 28-80mm f3.5-5.6 Ultrasonic Lens

I have the Canon EF 28-80mm on my EOS Elan 35mm. Will this lens perform well with the Digital Rebel XT if I purchase a body only camera? What is anyone's experience with digial picture quaity and this lens? This will be my first digital SLR purchase. Thank you.

I have an EF 28-80 f3.5-5.6 II lens myself. As far as I know it is built a bit cheaper than the version I lens you have, but optically the same.

And my god what an awful lens that is on a digital camera. If you do not want to spend more, just get the 18-55 kit lens with the Xt, it will perform quite a bit better than that 28-80 kit lens you have.
