I JUST received my new S3 today (YAY!!) but I have doing research on it for quite some time. I have a 49mm circular polarizer filter & a 49mm UV filter from my SLR camera as well as some random 52mm color filters. I figured I would purchase a 52mm lens adapter and a step down ring for the 49mm filters.

My questions is this.....I know there are some lens adapters that specify "for canon"...but what about all the other lens adapters?? Will any of them work with the canon? What details do I need to be sure it's compatible? I didn't know if there was anything specific or if it HAD to say "for canon". There are some cheap ones on ebay that just say "lens adapter 52mm" so I didn't know if they would work or not.

PS--I am new to this site and this is my first post! So hello to all and thanks for your help!

You might want to look into what you actually see with that small a filter on the front of the lens. I had heard that it was better to use a 58mm filter with a specific adapter, instead. Perhaps there is some vignetting at the shorter focal lengths.

Just a thought. <-- looking thoughtful

DonSchap is right, it would be better to step "up" and use a 58mm, even on the 52mm adapter. I currently have a 58mm CP filter that I step down to the 52mm adapter. I picked up the 52mm adapter and a 52mm UV filter from Lensmate ( http://www.lensmateonline.com/ ) and had the 58mm CP already.

Get the 52mm adapter from Lensmate and the step down ring to see what your filters look like. If there is an issue, Lensmate has good filter prices from what I have found.

Welcome to the site, I am a "noob" as well!

Thanks for the info! I wanted to try and save some cash for some other accessories....and utilize the stuff I have...but the S3 is a little more complicated than my SLR so I probably won't be getting any additional equipment (other than the lens adapter and filter) anytime soon.

I have heard about Lensmate all over this board....so I'll probably go with them for the 52mm lens adapter to use my old filters and just purchase a new circular polarizer and UV protector in 52mm as well.

Anyone have any luck with 52mm and the S3?? I thought I read somewhere that anything bigger than the 58mm would obstruct the view. Should I go with the standard 58mm? If I don't have to step up or down, I think it would be best...but heck, I really don't know!

Thanks again!

Go for the Lensmate 52mm...you already have a couple of filters in this size. I have both the 52 and 58 Lensmates for my S2 and S3. I only use the 58mm adapter for my conversions lenses, which are the Canon ones, and which only come in 58mm size. There are many conversion lenses in 52mm which you could add at a later stage. The 58mm does not obstruct any view as you are viewing through the lens (TTL), but may affect the flash output slightly. The Lensmate products are really high quality precision products in brushed aluminium, as opposed to others out there which are plastic (including Canon's own adapter).

I would just do what you were planning. If you already have the filters use em. step rings are only like $5. the 52mm IMO is better then the 58 because of the size of the end of the tube. It still blocks the flash but not near as much as the 58mm does. The problem i see with using the 58 and the 48mm filters is you may have to zoom in a little because you may get some vignetting. Its a hard call, i dont know whats worse flash shadow or vignetting. I have both and they each have benifits and drawbacks.

The 49mm filters fit fine on the 52mm adapter. There is no vignetting, i thought there would be but the filter is closer then i thought it would be and its large enough that its not in the way.

A cheap tube is about $10. and about $5. for the step ring. seems like a cheap way to use your older filters.
