Hello,
I was having a chat with a friend of mine (who owns a Digital Rebel XT 350D) over the 350D and the Pentax K100.
Both cameras are good, no doubt about that. However, he made a valid point when he mentioned that I should be careful about cameras being released on their first version.
For example, when the Canon Rebel 300D was released, it was fine but had a few features missing. After som time, when the the Rebel XT 350D came out, it addressed those issues and had a lot more benefits.
I am thinking that the Pentax K100 will have a few problems since it is going to be the first of its model.
Should this stop me from waiting and buying the K100 when it comes out?
Will it be better to wait for the second version of the camera model?
Or should I consider camera models that have already been revised and versioned-up? i.e. the successor to the Canon 300D, which is the Canon Rebel XT 350D
I hope this makes sense.
Regards,
Chris

Seriously???
The K100D is as much a revised DL2 as the 350 is a revised 300.. For one there are multiple Pentax models before the K100D all sharing the same sensor and similar design DS/DS2/DL/DL2.. The K100D is essentially a DL2 with the SR feature added.. The 300 and 350 were different cameras with different sensors just because they both have a 3 in front of the name doesn't make them the same camera...

The 300D was missing features to make it possible to make a DSLr under 1000$. That was a BIG step. But also many years ago!
The 300d and 350D are very different cameras, and the 350D is as much a first version as the *istDS was. The new K100D is a refinement of it, but not like the 20D -> 30D, it has more differences to it. So... yes, its the first K100D, and no, your friend is not right to not go for a camera because of that reason. The only reason I can see for not getting a K100D is the aging 6mp sensor. I'd save and wait on the K10D, if I wanted a Pentax lens system.

The K10D do you mean the K100D or the K110D?

Also, and out of curiosity. What year did the 300D and the 350D come out?
Just to have an idea of how long it took until a revised (new version) came out.

I mean the higher end model pentax will introduce maybe in the end of this year.
And the 300D was more than 2 years old when the 350D was intoduced. The 350D is from march last year (2005).

So its most likely that after the K100D, the successor to this model will be out after a year or so?
Is this fair to say? Considering that the 350D came out after a year after the 300D was released?

Rebet [300D] Announced 20-Aug-03
Rebet XT [350D] Announced 17-Feb-05
Time between the two 18 months. August this year will be 16 months since the 350D was announced - some people are suggesting its replacement will be announced Photinka [sp?].
I think the big thing to consider when purchasing a DSLR is their lens system, flash system, and path of upgrade. . . Had the Canon lineup been without a 20D when I purchased the XT - who knows, maybe I would be shooting Nikon now.

So you are suggesting that Canon will be coming out with a successor to the Rebel XT soon? If so, has Canon mentioned a date anytime soon?

What do you mean by: If the Canon lineup been without a 20D when you purchased the XT .... ?

aparmley,
I was looking at your website and I see that you are using a Canon Rebel XT 350D. The photos on your website are amazing!
I would like to ask you a few questions.
1) Does the Rebel XT fit nicely onto your hands? I tried holding the Nikon D70 and the Rebel XT 350D and the Nikon (being bigger) felt firmer on the hands. Does the Rebel XT strain your palms after holding it for a few minutes, hours even?
2) How many years have you been taking pictures? Did you attend any photography class? Or just self-learn?
Kinds Regards,
Chris
