View Full Version : Opinions On S3 IS
I am curious as to owner's opinions of their cameras regarding the S3 IS in any way whether it be negative or positive. I am getting a camera tomorrow and have not yet 100% decided whether to get the S3 or the FZ5 by Panny.
i love my S3
ive had it for about month now, and it has continued to impress me
fantastic point and shoot
excellent movie mode
you can add lens onto it
ive just had a quick look at the FZ5 on the net, and the S3 looks better in all fields
iso800 > iso400
640x480 pixels @ 30 fps > 320 x 240 pixels @ 30fps
15-1/3200 sec > 8-1/2000 sec
better burst mode
just to name a couple

I owned recently both the fz7 and s3. Decided to keep the fz7. Main reasons was sharper pictures, smaller and lighter, bigger screen, better menus. I think it helps looking at pictures taking by ordinery people at the site www.pbase.com.

As a n00b to anything more than a point-and-shoot.. I must highly advise getting the S3IS. It's taken a little bit of time to become comfortable with settings, but it takes great pictures. I'm going to be posting a full review with DCresource today or tomorrow.. so perhaps look for that as well...
I love the S3. It is the most fun camer I have owned. I've had film P&S, SLR and digital P&S. The S3 is more fun than all of them combined.
well i just went out to best buy and picked up my camera
they didnt have the s3, p850, or either panasonics
they did have the kodak z612 and canon s2 is
so i went wiht the canon and after i finish packing im going out back to test this puppy out
thanks for all the input
shame they didnt have the s3
from what ive heard/seen/read the s2 is a [i]very[/] capable camera
The S2 is nearly the same camera as the S3, and at closeout prices it's a bargain. The optics are the same, the IS is the same, basically the S3 is an enhanced S2. I think you'll be very happy.
well it got dark before i was able to go out and play but tomorrow i plan on getting up early and staying out all day to work with it in all types of light, early morning (dark) dusk (warm) noon (great light)

Bottom line the S2 is certainly no slouch, it is quite enjoyable and at current prices a steal. Not to mention rather versatile for a p&s, yeah it has some real nice perks and there is only one reason it's not still a $500 camera.

I was told that it was a "rare find" and that it took the store months to get a pair of them in. I bought one and the other is still there... waiting... waiting... waiting for "ruel" to take his S2 back and order the S3 IS over the phone.

if youre on a budget, get/keep the S2. if you like sleek black camera's and dont care about the price, then get the S3.
main difference are 5mp to 6mp and 1.8" LCD to 2.0" .. .very small difference
price difference are like.. $100? not sure but in Canada its a $100 difference. I got a discount though =D
*loving my new S3* :D

No doubt the S2 at today's prices is an exceptional buy. But I find the opportunity for faster shutters speeds, larger LCD, sports mode, 16:9 aspect ratio, decreased shutter lag, and 6.3 mega pix well worth the additional money.
OK live histogram, it's black, and decreased purple fringing levels, and post editing... so that would make nine points for choosing the S3 over the S2. I loved my S2 but it did have some short comings that S3 upgrade did address. So for me the upgrade is timely and welcomed would have really appreciated RAW though. But I guess canon has to give you a reason to buy the S4 ;) Image Stablization, add on tele, wide, and macro lens and filters makes this little compact a big boy. And considering you can pick up the camera all three lenses and two quality filters for under a grand almost makes this one a no brainer.
Sorry truflip but you made me get back on my S3 bicycle :) though not as significant an upgrade as the S1 to S2 the S3 gives you ample reason to want to own it. Did I mention live histogram :D wonderful addition, someone wrote this alone is worth the upgrade. I agree!

Oh yes the histogram.. LIVE histogram, i cant beleive i missed that out because its like... my new best friend in the camera lol. that things soo useful no more retaking shots.. well i still retake shots anyway so i can pick out the best of the few. but yea awesome tool =D
I heard all canon needs to enable RAW is upgrade firmware? is that right? cuz thats cool . i saw a bunch of RAW images edited for "HDR" and they look awesome :D
ah.. soo im starting to save up for a wide angle lens as soon as i get a memory card =)
