I am a film snob who has always shot Maxxum film cameras but recently gave in and bought a 5D. Being quite digitally ignorant, I have a question. I was under the impression that all digital cameras allowed the shooter to use the screen when shooting photos. However, I cannot seem to figure that out with the 5D. I can only get the screen to display exposure info and shot pics. Does the 5D allow the screen to be used when composing images or do you always have to use the eyepiece viewfinder? Thanks.
Yes, you have to use the eyepiece to view what you want to shoot. The LCD on a DSLR is used to allow you to view menu settings, etc., and does not provide a "live" view of your photo subject.

Just a side note. Any dslr you buy will not let you compose the shot with the lcd screen. As stated, the screen is only for menu settings and reviewing photos.

I was guessing that. No big deal...the eyepiece is all I've ever used. Just wanting to make sure I wasn't missing out on something. I guess ignorance isn't an excuse, but I chose film in college when the big digital revolution was first starting and now I'm playing catch up. Thanks again.
