I went to the Westfield International Air show today. We had clouds but luckily the rain held off. Here are some pics I took. I was able to take 275 but then I got a memory error and it erased about 30 and I couldn't take pics of the last 4 acts (Jet truck race, A-10s, A-10 bomb run, Blue Angles Fat Albert and the Blue Angles).

Whoa! Awesome pictures!!! The very first one of the F-15 with the afterburners on is my fav...but I like them all!

Nice clean shot of the F-16 on the ground, too.

I'm jealous! I haven't gotten to any airshows this year.:(

Yeah those are good! the first F16 and the last one are nice. Great shots, what memory are you using that gave the memory error? What a strange problem.

When I see Scupking/airshow, I just gotta look. I always enjoy them.
My son really likes the "fire" truck. Your first one is really cool.

I laugh at some of the guys with there big DSLRs that cost so much more then my little S2. It’s an impressive little camera.

On the contrary... I think your pictures turned out better without blue skies... the cloudy conditions really lend to great lighting and make the colours pop out great! Well done!

Yes excellent shots, it looks like a good show. By the way how did you do that last one?

Phill D, the last one of the C-130 was created not because of a camera setting but because of the weather conditions. We had 100% humidity. So the props were basically vaporizing the water vapor in the air. It’s great so people can see what a propeller actually dose to the air, it’s just usually invisible.

Those are some of the best photos I have seen of aircraft in action.

I am really impressed with the capabilities of the Canon S2-IS and of course the user :D .

This makes me want to attend an airshow . . . .

I really should make plans . . . .

great pics.

I'm into airshow photography (but my pics are never near this good, but i was using a point/shoot..) as well, but I have some questions..

What did these accessories do for the pictures:
52mm UV Filter
52mm Circular Polarizer
52mm ND8 Filter

..i dont understand what those did for/to the pictures..

The last pic (Fat Albert) is amazing... what were your settings like?

I'm doing my first pictures of an airshow in late july (Dayton) and am looking for ANY tips..

thank you :)

It is an impressive little camera, exactly the reason I just bought one to compliment my big DSLR. A BDSLR in the right hands can out do our S2s, hence the reason I have both. I have to say though after some time with the S2(just got it a couple of weeks ago, I am very impressed.) Getting used to the little quirks like the LCD viewfinder, and how it stops when a shot is taken has taken some getting used to. This stop action makes tracking a subject a little difficult. Great job shooting the Airshow.

Seeing as it was a cloudy day I only had on the UV filter (though I always keep the UV filter on no matter what). I had the camera set to P, ISO 50, set to clouds and I turned picture preview off. If it was sunny I would have kept it on P or put it on TV and set the shutter to 1/500th. During airshows and actually most of my shooting I use the view finder and not the lcd screen. Keep in mind I did not bring a tripod I just held the camera with my hands.

Thanks for the info. I just cannot imagine taking pictures at an airshow that are anywhere near as close/good/crisp. But then again, I was working with a 3x optical zoom on my Sony DSC-W7.. so that right there hurts. I got A LOT of noise and distortion. I can show examples, if needed.. but they arent pretty.

Sadly, the S3 can only get to an ISO of 80.

I'm trying to do more research about it, because I'll have virtually no practice beforehand. I've gone to the local municple airport and photographed a couple planes on take off -- but the images arent even close to the ones you shared.. Perhaps I just need more practice, i guess..

Thanks for the tips and if you have any more info (Anyone) please do share!

Took my 8 year old daughter to the EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) show in Oshkosh, Wisconsin (USA) on THursday, because it was going to be cooler (90-95 degrees) than the rest of the weekend...
Shot some photos - not quite as nice as Scupking's...

My oldest daughter has my A620 at camp with all my rechargeable batteries, so I stopped at Sam's Club and picked up some Energizer Titanium batteries - 6 4-packs of AA's for $10.50. I loaded my S2IS with a new set, and put two extra sets in my pockets. At the end of the day (445 photos later) I was still on the original set of batteries! And they are still going strong... The few times I turned on the flash, I could see the recycle time was pretty long, but for outdoor shots, i was impressed.

Here's a few more photos. Apparently there were a couple F22's that were buzzing the airshow. One of their features is that they can hover, similar to a Harrier. One of them went ballistic, straight up. Then it would level off at a couple miles. I couldn't see it that well, but it looked like it was spiraling down, but not nose first. In reality, it was hovering, slowing coming straight down as if it was in a flat spin. Afterwards, I kicked myself for not using the video mode on the S2. Photos are cool, but hearing the roar helps transmit the feeling of raw power!
