To eliminate some of those problems you will have to move up to an SLR, but that is only the begining. You'll need lenses, and a decent external flash. I have been pretty impressed with my newly purchased S2, the little viewfinder screen takes some getting used to, but the flash balances very well, and the photo quality so far has been very good, not up to my 10D but still very good.
The batteries you speak of are very new and still in the experimental stages, they work in a similar manner to a capacitor but with a much larger charge that can be doled out over a long period. http://www.sciencentral.com/articles/view.php3?type=article&article_id=218392803
I just purchased Sony batteries with a charger that charges them in about 15 minutes. I haven't used them much so I am not sure at all on the reliability.
