Hello,

A few years ago (10 or so), my dad bought a Nikon SLR camera. I think it was a Nikon F3. Together with the camera are 2 lenses, to which I dont know the model names.

Will most old/classic Nikon SLR lenses be compatible with the new DSLR Nikon cameras?

This is to say. If I decide on buying a Nikon DSLR camera, will I be able to use the old lenses on the new DSLR Camera?

Regards,
Chris

If they are AF lenses, chances are they will work. You may want to take them into a shop to check for sure, though.

All Nikon AIS lenses will work with the D200. I have a ton of AIS lenses. I went down the Canon route though as there just wasn't even a sniff of a D200 when I bought my digital camera.

All AIS lenses will work on a Canon EOS 350D/XT, 20D, 30D, 5D etc. too including metering, but you have to get a mount adapter. In this regard the Canon EOS handles them better than the Nikon d70/d50.

The D50 and D70 are compatible with these types of lenses:

AI, AI-S, E, AI-P, AF, AF-D, AF-I, AF-S, G, VR, DX

With AI, AI-S, and E lenses, you have to do manual exposure, the camera's meter doesn't work with them.

AI, AI-S, E, and AI-P are all manual focus lenses.

Most manual focus Nikon lenses work perfectly on the Sigma SD10 too, via a JTAT Nikon F-SA adapter.
I only have the "cheapo" E-series 50mm f1.8 AI-S at the moment but as its an MTF grade 4.1 its not a bad lens at all, heres some samples:
