Hello, "photoholics"! :D

Not sure where to post this, really, so I posted it here. :o

Would like to show you a photo I took Tuesday with my Canon Powershot S3IS, and maybe get some comments and critique. It's a photo of the wall outside the church in the town we lived when I was born. I used the Landscape mode for this photo, because I wanted to see how it worked. The photo in this post has been resized, of course. The original is taken at the cameras highest resolution and quality settings.

So...any comments or critique?

Rotate the photo about a degree or so CCW and when you recrop make sure that curb gets cropped - I think it will make this image stronger. Nice job ;)

Thanks, aparmley. Yeah...I guess I did get it a bit crooked. Even though the S3 has a grid to help you get the picture straight, I still get some pics crooked. :o Maybe my eyes are crooked?

This is what it looks like, after I changed it according to your suggestions. Better! :D

Very nice shot Wesan! How long have you had your S3 IS? Have you taken any night shots yet? If so how is the noise level (assuming you might have printed those photo's)? Roughly how many shots have you got per charge?

Perhaps you could cost a few of your night shots? :)

Keep up the great work!

I'm considering the S3 IS as well as the older Sony DSC-H1.

This is from my S2, which is very similar to the new S3.

15 second exposure....

Looks much better I think.

Hey - seems to me the harder I try to get a level picture the worse it is! :p

Hey dustyporch,

Nice pic!! Very sharp. Nice colors. Good exposure. What was the ISO, shutter speed and aperture? Curious.

How long have you had your S2? And can I ask you how many shots you get per charge with what kind of batteries? :)

And for all the S3 IS owners...have any one of you used the new Powerex 2700 mAh NiMH's? The reviews say with 2500 mAh NiMH's you should get roughly 550 shots per charge. Give or take. Wondered if any of you, while using the Powerex 2700's, found out how many shots you got with a single charge.

Thanks.

I've had the S2 for a few months, since April I think. I have no idea exactly how long the batteries last, because they last so long that I forget about it, and then am surprised when they are dead! I always have a spare set on me... I use NIHM rechargeables, either 2300ma or 2500ma.

That shot was F2.8, 15seconds shutter, ISO100, no flash, no zoom. And it was dark enough that I could barely see what I was doing with the camera settings. I had to keep tipping the tripod toward the path lights.

Wesan - Very nice shot really like the "revision" after cropping and squaring. I always shoot crooked no matter what I do...;-)

I shot this today while on a short trip into Michigan... first real experiment with the polarizer... needs some PP work, but the water came out well. Still learning...

No flash!!? WOW! Nice! A night shot without using a flash. Good Job!

Thanks for listing the settings for the shot.

And, good shot AMDnut. Now if only you had a blue sky and some clouds. :)

So, far I've been happy with what I've been seeing from your S2 IS cameras. But while the S2 is pretty similar to the S3 the S3 does use a different chip (not that that should make a BIG difference...but still). Would like to see some night shots taken using the S3.

For me I'm still pondering...Canon S3 IS or the Sony DSC-H1? Never mind that the S3 IS is out-of-stock in many shops in Toronto as we speak. Hmmm...which way should I go? :)

One question...NiMH batteries...What do you guys think of the Energizer 2500 mAh NiMH's? I saw an old shootout with lesser capacity versions of the Energizer/Powerex NiMH batteries. The Energizers actually came out ahead of the Powerex. I thought it would be the other way around. Here is the link ---> http://www.imaging-resource.com/ACCS/BATTS/BATTS.HTM Has any one used the Powerex 2500 or 2700 mAh batteries with either their S3's or S2's? How did that go? And I'm pretty sure the S3/S2 should be fine with either brand right? As I don't recall ever reading that either camera was too picky about the brand being used.

Shooting at night is a lot of fun, and you get some very interesting pictures. Its funny how at night the camera doesn't see the same thing as you do, so you have to work harder to get what you want.

Check out the "Lights in the Night" thread in the Photo gallery, many cool shots there.

Thanks. I'll do that. :)

I never thought of it that way. Taking night shots. Appreciate the tip.

I think I might get a S3 if I can find one in-stock. I was at a Future Shop last week and they were sold out. And the dweeb sales rep was vague as to when their next shipment would arrive. Might try BestBuy today. They are having a sale of sorts. $5.00 instant savings..woooHOO!! And a $25.00 mail-in rebate. Not bad. Save $30.00. The cost of an Energizer charger/4 pack (x4 2500 mAh batteries...$29.99). Have you used Energizer NiMH batteries? What kind do you usually use?

And I am also thinking of the old Sony DSC-H1. Should be under $500.00 now. Capable camera. Just not as feature packed as the S3 IS in some areas. Any thoughts on the H1?

Later.

Best buy in Oakville had stock of the S3 at lunchtime today.

Batteries, I just use whatever is in the house. I have tons of differnent brands, 2000ma or better, and I use whatever is charged up.

Thanks for the heads-up! But I'm in the Markham area. I'll check the Markville Shopping Center's location first. I mean I'm not in a hurry exactly so...

So i guess the S3 isn't picky battery wise...good thing! Have you tried 2700 mAh Powerex batteries yet?

I use 2600 mAh in my S2 and get a good amount of pics out of them. Heres a pic I took a few weeks back with my S2. We will see what happens this weekend at the airshow. Its sapose to rain both days but Im still going to go.

hahaha, scupking, that's a real great picture :D .
It's a real mind breaker (it looks like it's hanging in the air, but the rotors aren't moving, wich causes some conflicts in the brain  ).
Nice :p

Hey dustyporch,

Was just at the BestBuy. They had 3 Canon S3 IS cameras in. Were on sale with a $30.00 total price discount ($5.00 instand rebate and a $25.00 mail-in rebate). But alas I went with the other camera I was considering. A Sony H1. Got them to knock off almost $80.00 from their "sale" price.

If I have problems again..this time with my H1 (previously had a defective H5). It's "...Canon S3 IS here I come!!!". :)

Later dood. Unsubcribing myself from this thread. Cya around!

Wish I had blue sky and clouds:-)

The whole day was gray/white like in the pick.

Hey guys, battery info.... I use the 2500mAh Energizer and Powerex both. I am counting the number of shots I get currently. I have not changed the batteries yet!!! I haev over 800 shots, but one big thing is I use the viewfinder for 80
% of my shots. I only use the LCD on about 20%.... that keeps batteries going for a long time.

Also, I use the Maha MH-C204W charger for charging duties. It charges in under 2 hours for 4 cells, then trickles the batteries to fully charge them. Most chargers only get the batteries to about 85% of the charge, it takes a low trickle to "top them off".

On another note, earlier post said the S3 uses a different chip, I was under the impression that it was the same as the S2?!?!

Yes, indeed it is a new CCD chip. Mines arrived this week and I'm loving it... review coming soon.
