Hello everyone
I'm saving up to buy a digital camera, and can only afford a point and shoot, so I've settled on the 7.1mp Canon powershot A620. I'm thinking at least a 1gig card, so is it worth it to get the SanDisk Ultra II 1 gig over the regular SanDisk 1 gig for 20 extra bucks? Or would you recommend some other brand?

Thanks

I don't think the A620 can make use of the faster speed of the Ultra II, so your only benefit would be in uploading pictures with a fast card reader.

I've had good results with Kingston memory cards, and they seem to be slightly cheaper than Sandisk.

Check www.newegg.com, I bought a couple of sd cards from them, they are all good and cheaper.

Ok, so I guess I don't need the faster one. Now should I get the 1gig or 2 gig? About how many pictures will each hold on the highest resolution?

Did you check the review (http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/canon/powershot_a620-review/index.shtml) on this site? It has a handy chart with image sizes and how many a card can hold.

312 for a 1G card, 624 for a 2 Gig card at superfine and full resolution.

FWIW, I prefer two smaller cards to one large card. Flash memory rarely fails, but it still makes me feel more secure having my images split between cards - just in case... :)

Good thinking... so I'm gonna go with a 1gig now and then maybe get another one later, and I think I'm going to order my camera later today, thanks again!

The high-speed card can come in handy on that camera... especially in continuous shooting mode (the camera will keep shooting rapidly as long as you hold the button down), and when shooting video clips a 60fps. If you plan to shoot frequently, the high speed card may be a good choice.

A regular Sandisk card will keep up with all modes on an A620, burst and video. At this point, the price difference between regular and Ultra-II is pretty small, and the ability to download to the computer faster is probably worth it. But unless you have an especially slow standard card, the regular cards will offer all the speed this camera can use.

I'm potentially buying a Canon S3 IS in the near future, and would probably settle for the Ultra II SD card.. but would the SD Extreme III card, with double the read/write speed, be worth the extra $$?

I just want to make sure the S3 IS can utilize that higher speed, and if not, save a few bucks and stick with the Ultra II.

Thanks,
Paul

No, the S3 won't utilize the faster Extreme-III memory card. You'll see no difference from the Ultra-II.
