Hello all,
Just got my XT in the mail from amazon a couple days ago and been having alot of fun with it! I ended up purchasing a Tamron AF70-300mm f4-5.6 LD lens - I had my hopes on the Canon 70-300mm f4-5.6 IS USM but I am really pleased with the pictures I am getting with the Tamron.
So far this is my only lens and I'm in the process of looking for another one. I'm looking in the arena from 18mm to 135mm as far as focal lengths and the price range of ~$300. The lenses that caught my eye were the 24-105mm lenses from Canon and Tamron. Any other suggestions for a general purpose zoom lens in these focal lengths or comments on the lenses I'm looking at?
Thanks!
Chris
P.S. Of course I have to post one of my first shots ;)

There are a few good Canon lens in your zoom range. The 24-105 that you said you had your eye on is way out of your price range. It goes for roughly $1200+.
I don't know that much about Tamron lenses, but these are some good Canon:
EF 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 USM
EF 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 II
EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM
All go for around 300 dollars. The third lens has some great reviews, and it's probably the one you want. Hope this would narrow it down for you. :)

Will cover the 18mm end but some $$$ over $300:
Canon 17-85 f/4-5.6 at http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=222&sort=7&cat=27&page=2
Sigma 18-50 f/2.8 at http://www.fredmiranda.com/reviews/showproduct.php?product=232&sort=7&cat=37&page=2
Sigma 17-70 f/2.8-4.5 at http://www.photozone.de/8Reviews/lenses/sigma_1770_2845/index.htm
Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 at http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/reviews/tamron_17-50_review.html
The kit lens, Canon 18-55, would be cheaper but it doesn't get any accolades.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Pagnamenta, I mixed up my focal lengths :o - what I meant to say I was looking at the 28-105mm Canon and Tamron models. Does anyone know how these two lenses perform? What are the main differences between them?
Also, do you think this will give me enough of a wide angle? I want to try to fill the gap between ~18mm and 70mm but don't really want to sacrifice any wide angle. I want to use this as a landscape/general purpose lens.
Thanks again!

I am on a roadtrip on my bike right now and have started using my new Sigma 17-70 and have been pleased with it's performance so far. I took some pictures at an event the other night before leaving and I was well pleased with how those pictures came out. The overall feeling of the lens is good. It's the lens I left on while traveling and it worked out well haveing the wide angle for some landscape shots, and the 70 end was adequate for some quick wildlife shots. For me, it seems to be a good lens to have on the camera as it seems to be covering a good range for my travels.

The Canon EF 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM II is a good lens, very affordable (a bit above 200$) with good colour and contrast is definately a lens to consider. It is also a light lens. The Tamron 28-105 f2.8 is very heavy.
Another nice lens is the Canon EF 28-135mm f3.5-5.6 IS. I know it's a little past what you want to spend. Probably around 425.00. However, it's got IS.
I personnaly owned the 17-85 IS and that was also a very good lens.
