I have an FZ3 and love it but the focusing behaviour seems strange and I was wondering if others noticed the same thing. In bright light or a bright lit room the 3 spot or 9 spot metering works as expected i.e. a small square to indicate what is in focus. However if the room lights should be reduce soom but still reasonably bright the focus area turns into the large indicator so you can't tell what is being focused on. Does this happen to others as well?

Did you get an instruction booklet with your camera? If you did, turn to page 73, where it states "in the digital zoom or when you take pictures in dark places , the AF area is displayed on the center of the screen with a size wider than usual". "Dark places" of course is purely subjective. I think that pretty much explains it....

Phil, I think you are absolutely right. Thank you, I didn't notice that in the manual before. It does make we wonder what the camera is focusing on however as the "larger" focus area can include objects in many different ranges. I'll have to try some tests when I have some time.

That can be a concern at times - in fact the ability to manual focus is the one thing I would add to the FZ3 if I could. Of course, no camera has everything, and I'm not willing to go up to the massive (in today's terms) FZ15/20 in order to get manual focusing. I like the size and overall capabilities of my FZ3 too much......
