I'm wondering if there is REALLY a big difference in the 2 models?? I know the 1MP, but is there anything else really???

The general consensus is that there is only minimal changes in the S3 over the S2. In fact, many people feel the best thing about the S3 is that it pushed down the price of the S2!

1MP is one change, another is it has ISO800 (s2 stops at 400). I would imagine the firmware is newer and better. And black is better than silver IMHO.

I would rather (and did) buy a S2 at the discounted prices they are available for right now.

How much was your S2? I got my S3 from Dell for $386.05 shipped last month. When I was still shopping, I found the S2 for around $340 shipped in most stores. Not a big difference.

No huge differences, really..

I went with the S3IS for any/all upgrades and because of the black. Fickle, I know, but what can I say?

I just had the same debate and ended up with an S2. The S2 replaces my aging, but still viable G2 that I have used for the last 4 years as my on person camera(I carry it with me to work, in my daypack, etc). My main reasons for the S2 were for the stabilized super zoom, and excellent movie mode. The S3 offers a few improvements over the S2, but not enough to spend the extra $$s on in my opinion.

That S3 price from Dell was a HUGE sale! That was definitely a deal. Its $499US on Dell now.

I got my S2 late April from a shop in Vancouver for $400CDN (the S3 is around $579CDN right now).

I kind of wonder why they didnt jiggle the buttons a bit on the S3 - or am I the only one that is forever activating the menu button by mistake  I doubt the ISO 800 is any more usable than the ISO 400 was on the S2 - if the ISO 400 on the S3 is better than the ISO 400 on the S2 then that would be worth having, still no RAW though... the other problem I've found is that Canon have ruined me... am trying to buy an inexpensive first camera for my youngest and keep having to send them back as the test images I take are universally dismal... I'll be blowed if I'm spending £200 on a ruddy camera for a 7 yr old that'll drop it in the nearest puddle mind!!! :D

Cat, I agree with the menu button issue... I'm always pushing that darn thing by mistake.

Regarding ISO400 - Check out Neat Image (http://www.neatimage.com). This plugin/program does an amazing job of removing the noise from S2 High-iso images.

I was just at Dell and if anyone is interested, the S2 is on sale for $319!!! I have an additional $35 off coupon to use, so I just think I might have found my camera!! I will still look into the H2 with my dad-he works for a retailer and can get discounts and will see what kind of a deal he can get and then go from there.

THANK U ALL FOR YOUR RESPONSES AND OPINIONS!!! I think really what it'll come down to is what feels good to me and the $$ factor.

thanks again!:D

Dell had (http://www.xpbargains.com/index.php/send_deal/54919) the S2 for only $264 shipped, but the coupon expired from overusage that same day, and I was undecided so I unfortunately didn't get to use it. I got mine from Beach (http://www.beachcamera.com) for $325 shipped.

No doubt the S2 at today's prices is an exceptional buy. But I find the opportunity for faster shutters speeds, larger LCD, sports mode, 16:9 aspect ratio, decreased shutter lag, and 6.3 mega pix well worth the additional money.

And its black!

And don't forget the live histogram!

But of course - the colour is also VERY important... Hehehe... Just teasing you a little. :p

OK live histogram, it's black, and decreased purple fringing levels, and post editing... so that would make nine points for choosing the S3 over the S2. I loved my S2 but it did have some short comings that S3 upgrade did address. So for me the upgrade is timely and welcomed would have really appreciated RAW though. But I guess canon has to give you a reason to buy the S4 ;) Image Stablization, add on tele, wide, and macro lens and filters makes this little compact a big boy. And considering you can pick up the camera all three lenses and two quality filters for under a grand almost makes this one a no brainer.
