Hi guys, I'm pretty set on buying the nikon D50 as my first dslr:) I just have a few questions:
-I read a review saying that there isn't a "depth of field preview button". So does this mean that I can't see what the picture will look like? What exactly does this mean?
-it also said there isn't any "white balance fine tuning". Does this mean that I can't adjust for cloudy, etc.?
Thanks!

I don't know about others, but I've never really felt the DOF preview button on any of my cameras has really helped see what actual image is going to look like, given the vagaries of darkening viewfinder and all. I doubt you'll miss it.

The WB fine tuning means that for each setting you don't get the +/- .3 step fine tuning that was available on the D70. Again, I doubt you'll miss it. If you shoot RAW you can correct to your heart's content in PP, and even without it, you're not likely to see a dramatic change. But I've never used the D50, so perhaps actual owners will offer other views.

I do not miss the depth of field preview button either. You can take the picture and review it immediately after taking it, then you can make your adjustment. As far as the WB, the settings are: Auto, Incandescent, Flourescent, Direct sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade and Preset where you can use gray or white objects or an existing photograph as reference for white balance.

Get the D50. It's great. Just don't shoot at night cus there's no light on the LCD readout! alright a flashlight will help.

You could look through the viewfinder...;)

Indeed... I do not think I have used the light of the setting-info LCD more than one time in a year... you really can do fine without.

And depth of field preview? maybe 4 times in a year. And it would not have a big deal if it had not been there. For me, of course... things like this can be personal.

I actually use the lighted LCD all the time. It is a good feature to have. DOF preview is useless to me though. Does the D50/D70 have MLU? Can't recall.

No. Except for cleaning. Fortunately I don't run into many shooting situations where MLU is required, but it would have been nice. To their credit Nikon does offer spot metering on all of their dSLR's which is a much more usefull feature for me. Glad to see that Canon finally added it to the 30D. YMMV.

I wish my D50 had a backlit LCD but as a work-around I bought a small LED flashlight, (small as in key shain size), and attached it to the right side of the camera strap. At night I turn on the light and because it points down, I can see the LCD. It's a pain to use but for $5.00 I can live with it.

Yes you can use the viewfinder but trying to adjust exposure compensation, timer, etc. is a lot easier through the LCD.

Bob

I got my D50 at DigitalLiquidators.com for a great price. It was the best I could find, actually, and I did some serious shopping online. I actually bought a kit which included some other bells and whistles, but it was still an unbeatable price.
