layers help, please advise

instead of me asking petty questions to the people that know what u are doing..

what is the best book in understanding layers..... IE, have the knowledge to make sport card template/magazine covers...

i just recently viewed a members site, where he had a kid photo in a montage?
1 big photo, with 3 or 4 others layered on top...

how do u do this, do u open a new document and make it real big, or do u interpolate a picture, then place the others accordingly??

I would recommend Adobe Photoshop Classroom in a Book as the best and easiest way, at least for me to learn layers and digital photography many secrets, i.e. masks and channels, painting and editing, photo retouching and so on.
