The link above is to a Service Advisory for - Nikon D2H, D70, N55, Coolpix 3100, Coolpix 5700, Coolpix SQ.
Yesterday there were several posts concerning the COOLPIX 5700 regarding "black screen."
Please be advised that Nikon is taking care of this. Please go to NIKON web site at above link and print the Service Advisory Prodcut Return Form. I called Nikon to determine the legitimacy of the advisory - it is legitimate.
Thanks for the opportunity to use this forum.

Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't seem that this advisory has anything to do with the D2H, D70 or N55.

Ray,
When you get down in the nitty-gritty of the Nikon advisory it very clearly states all of the cameras I listed... it is a direct quote. I sincerely hope you are not offended in any way. Sometimes too much information is not enough, :)
Respectfully,
John

This is the "entire" text from the advisory you linked.
"It has come to our attention that in a limited number of COOLPIX 3100, 5700 and SQ digital cameras, an electronic component may, in some instances, fail affecting your camera's performance and/or operability.
While only a limited number of COOLPIX 3100, 5700 and SQ digital cameras are affected by this advisory, if your camera presents symptoms that can include (1) images with a strong color tint, (2) images that are totally black and/or (3) images with visible defects, Nikon will, upon confirmation that the problem is associated to this Service Advisory, service your camera free of charge.
To obtain complimentary service for cameras affected by this advisory, please click the link below to download and print the Service Return Form. The Service Return Form provides detailed return instructions.
The Frequently Asked Questions button at the bottom of this page offers more information about this advisory and, should you have more questions, also provides information about how to contact Nikon.
We apologize for any inconvenience you may experience."
Maybe I'm just blind, which is certainly possible, but I don't see it.

Additionally, instruction #1 in the return form clearly states:
"1. Please send only the COOLPIX 3100-5700-SQ camera as listed in this Service Advisory. Do not send any other accessory or product through this Service Advisory."
It doesn't get much more nitty gritty than that.
Ray.

Ray,
Your reply to me is a waste of your time and mine - the world is not black and white - it is in color and color includes mistakes. I am really sorry that I made a mistake here on this forum. I was just trying to be helpful.
When you go to NIKON support they include in the INITIAL advisory all the cameras I mentioned - and the next link (well hidden on the initial page below the other cameras ) includes the link you copied and pasted here on the forum.
I feel very awkward trying to support folks on this forum with people who flame you when you support them, Ray.
I have been at this photography racket for more than 55 years, been a geek for more than 60 years (geek wasn't even a word back then), worked as an electrical engineer, nuclear engineer, mechanical engineer, web designer, developer, teacher, and student, and for the past 13 years played in the field of technology as a third level trainer both in hardware and software for several major corporations and the Federal government.
And, somewhere along the way I learned something absolutely simple, but very important. We are here to support the SUCCESS of others - We are not here to tear others down or belittle them and their contributions regardless of their seemingly unimportance.
As I go thru this life, I meet some really nice people (unlike you) who want to take the time to do nitty gritty correction of the most unimportant details, without a single concern for the feelings of the person who is making some simple contribution to the success of others. You fall into that category - rude and uncaring. I really am ashamed of you.
Respectfully,
John Underwood

I don't really understand your anger. I never said that you made a mistake. I have a D70 and was trying to find the information to which you were referring. Nowhere on the link you supplied did it give any information or have a link to an advisory for a D2H-D70-N55.
In my first reply, I said that maybe I was missing something(it has happened before), that the advisory you had linked didn't have any information about a D2H, D70 or N55. Instead of relplying with a clarification/link for the pertinent information, you say that it is clearly there, look harder.
Since you were unwilling to supply any further information, I went to Nikon Support where I searched for a link to the information. I'm sorry if asking you for the information makes me "rude and uncaring".
The following link will give information for all of the cameras listed.

What is wrong with you two. Ray, it seems as if John was ONLY trying to be helpful.
When my LCD & Electoonic veiwfinder went haywire, I panicked! The info on this page was most helpful, although I din find the advisory on my own, it was a comfort to know that my concerns were, shared.
Grow up!
One of the reasons that I hesitate to EVER post on this site is this kind of backbiting.

Hello,
It is OK - thanks for the replies (both of them).
Sent my camera to Nikon yesterday - packed it according to their specs. We will see how the response is.
Bottom line, Nikon has the courage to note problems and solve them at their expense instead of ours.

Thanks for helping out John. You were most helpful. :) I hope Nikon India is of help in the matter as I bought the camera in US but I live in India.

Interesting - it should be a good test for Nikon support!
Since they are a world wide organization; it should not be an issue. The warranty applies to the camera, not to you personally (smile).

I don't want anyone to think that I am trying to be rude, but if you buy a Nikon (or pretty much any brand of camera) outside the US, I don't believe the warranty is good in the US. I am not sure, but I would assume that it works in reverse, too.

Ray - she said she bought the camera in US.

I realize she bought the camera in the US. What I am saying is that since non-US warranties are not good in the US, US warranties may not be good in India. I would certainly check before I sent the camera in for service.

Greetings All!
Nikon returned my camera - received it the day before yesterday.
Don't know all they did, but a few notable things have changed.
The "delay" inherent with this line of cameras has all but disappeared.
In RAW format it appears that they have included a buffer in this fix.
The camera performs much better - my battery "seems" to last longer - maybe I am just a happy camper and that is all.
Bottom line - Nikon kept their promise - and that is all that really counts. They packed it well, but UPS tried to beat the box up... looked like they threw it a country mile and then ran over it! Had me a bit worried before I tested the camera.
Please do not criticize this candid opinion... because that is all it really is... a candid opinion of their service.

John & all
I too sent my camera off to Nikon & recieved it back in a timely fashion
The camera is now FIXED. My only complaint is this. I sent a note along with my camera about the battery door hinge coming off when opened. On the packing slip there was the comment "recieved your note", but lo & behold the door STILL COMES OFF WHEN OPENED. I guess when it will no longer stay closed I will have to resort to duct tape.
The important thing is I HAVE MY CAMERA BACK!
Cheers
Blair:)

I own a CoolPix 5700, my camera works fine for about 30 secs after turning it on. Then the viewfinder display & LCD gradually turn dark in a few seconds and the pictures I take after that are severely underexposed. I took it to my local service center where they said that the sensor of the camera needs to be replaced and it costs $200 .
Since i live outside the states i would appreciate if anyone can get this question answered for me :
Is this symptom that my camera has is a sensor mater or is it merely the fluorescent lamp that lights viewfinder and LCD which is mentioned in camera’s manual ?
I would appreciate any help.

My nikon encountered a "bad chip" problem this summer.
Nikon had put out a service advisory for this model & fixed mine for free.
I guess you need to E-mail them in your country & ask what's up with that?
I wish you luck
