I would like to get a new camera for my husband (anniv gift), but need advice. We currently have a Canon powershot, 2 years old, 4 megapixels.

What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible. prefer under $400 with shipping

What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you? I think he would like a smaller camera, but image quality and quick shooting time are more important

How many megapixels will suffice for you? at least 4

What optical zoom will you need? Standard I guess, I don't really know anything about cameras

How important is “image quality” to you? 9

Do you care for manual controls? My husband never changes the settings, but it would be nice to have options

What will you generally use the camera for?Pictures of our children. We take picture nearly every day and make a lot of photo collages/videos on the computer

Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? We've never printed larger than 5x7, but may do up to an 8x10

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? indoor and outdoor photos

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? lots of photos of moving toddlers, sports as they get older

Are there particular brands you like or hate? no

Are there particular models you already have in mind? Canon A700, Canon SD 600 or 630?

Yes those are the best Canon compacts for under $400. The A540 or A610 would be cheaper and may meet your needs. What powershot does he have now? If that one works well, why does he need a new one? What are you gaining by getting a new powershot? Any powershot will have redeye so be prepared for that.

The Casio Z120, Sony P200 and W50 are other options that may cost less.
