View Full Version : Interest in Monthly Assignment?
I started a thread for a "Monthly Assignment".
http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?t=20100
Sort of a non-contest contest ....
However, after a few days only a few regulars have posted to it.
I just changed the rules to allow any qualifying shot from recent months.
Question is; would there be more interest with some other format? This was a "try it on for size" run.
One thing suggested via PM was voting. We could start a seperate "Feedback" thread for each 10 photos (since the polling feature caps out at 10). We could hold voting open for a week, but invite comments even prior to "completion". Would that make it more interesting?
So; what else is putting everyone off? If there's just no interest, then "Oh well", but if it flies I think it'd be fun and worthwhile.
So, suggestions? Comments? Feedback?
There's some really great photographers here (George, CW, Peter, CDI, Jamison, Cold, .... the list goes on). You guys wanna share a common shooting theme for a month? Is it that you don't want the comments sure to follow?
Ummm, I feel like a guy who threw a dead party. :o :o

Vich for me I liked the idea but I just didn't have anything worth posting that month. I seem to shoot things in bursts so it was just timing. Your idea might also be a good way to get contributions selected for a dcrp calendar for 2007. I suggested a calendar might be a good idea last year but it was too late to get it going for 2006. Maybe the best polled of your monthly assignments could be used for a calendar. What do you think Jeff?

You mean a paper calendar? We'de need to get originals for that.
Anyway, the slight proceeds could go to Jeff to help pay the costs. Maybe folks would have more interest in "giving back". If we sold 10 calendars and he made $5 each, well, it's a little something anyhow.
I like the idea of working towards a goal. It does spark up the interest factor - not just doing it for academic value.

Sweet Idea - I'm surprised Jeff didn't bite on that - I'd buy one.
I think lack of structure is a contributing factor here vich.
I think I might have one coming for you tomorrow though [image that is]

Yeah, I could see it attracting new interest here. People are just dying to use their new toys, get recognized, and learn to do better. Getting in the calander is pretty close to "getting published".
Agree about no structure. I'm really unclear what we can get out of it since the response threads would be a mess, and without competition, what's the point? The calendar thing could just be the catalyst.
Sometimes, its better to think less and just dive in, unfortunately, it shows. Ergo, this thread. We'll have another in about 2 weeks to see what to do about next month.
Anyhow, suggestions on structure?

Hey, I love the idea but, like many of the folks here, my shooting schedule is determined by my "real-life" schedule, and right now I have several new products going into production, and trips to China, India, and Australia, in the works, a month break, and then back to Eastern and Southern Europe.
A lot of new photo ops, but it will be October by the time I get them postable. I did run over to the Desert Arboretum last weekend and still haven't even looked at those in NC4. I know that there are a few "keepers" in the group... maybe Sunday(?)
Don't give up. It takes more than a few weeks to get regular contributors, and the calander idea has been brought up several times. The problem is that while the regulars here might buy it, there would only be 12 people really "sold".
Thanks for the reminder, as I had forgotten about the "assignment" thread. Maybe you need a separate board for this, but that's up to Jeff.

How about having a downloadable lower resolution calendar at a relatively cheap price (basically adding to Jeffs donation fund) and take orders for a higher res properly printed one. That way anyone who wanted a professionaly printed one could pay a sensible comercially viable cost for it & Jeff would know how many were needed & if the numbers made commercial sense. Some people may even buy both ;)
Vich maybe if you set suitable assignments now to go with each of the 12 months then people could post their old shots as they dug them out & new shots as they took them, up to a deadline point to have the winners chosen & calendars printed. How about for example
January - & the theme is "breathtaking"
February - & the theme is "Now what?"
March - & the theme is "New beginning"
April - & the theme is "water"
May - & the theme is "blooming"
.....etc through the year.

Maybe a screen saver then. Embossed lens caps and whibal cards, stuff like that hmm?
I wouldn't have been near that imaginative. Maybe the blooming one. I'd be really proud to win a month and have it hanging on Y'All's wall for a month. You really think we could get enough hi-res photos with enough quality? I've seen a few posted here - George's desert landscapes, lots of great flowers. Could take a year to scrape it together though.

Looks like this thread has gone a little cold while I've been away. Oh well I guess that was as good a way of gauging interest as any. Vich I agree I would have been pretty proud to have won a month as well, although I don't think that would have been very likely. Nice to dream though.

We had 16 entries. Not too bad considering it was wishy-washy and didn't leave people much time to go take shots.
I just posted this month's assignment here. (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/showthread.php?p=129643#post129643)
I removed the restriction of new photos only. I think that was a killer last month.
The response threads have died off on last months, so I think the voting is the main feedback we'll see - unless everyone suddenly shows more interest.
We'll see how it goes. It'll be an interesting sideline but doesn't look like much more than that. Still, worth posting for those who do participate.
