Budget

* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible.

As little as posiible to get the job done. I sell roofs and need to take the camera up on roofs. I don't want to spend more than I have to as the camera will be "at risk" due to alltitude..

Size
small enough to fit into a belt holder.
* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?

Features

How many megapixels will suffice for you?
I don't know as I am very much a novice. I recently had a JVC digital video camera stolen. It had a zoom that worked fairly well. It is probably a 1999 model.

I look forward to the convienence of a digital card vs the hardwired way of my old one.

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify)
Again, not sure but I need to be able to show details like dents in aluminum fascia; I would be taking theses from the ground. Typically between 15-60 ft away.
* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)
probably 7-8
Do you care for manual controls?
not important
General Usage

* What will you generally use the camera for?
Work...taking pictures of home damage.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not?
probably not
Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?
Not a lot, but would like the option
Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?
hopefully
Miscellaneous
Generally speaking, I need an innexpensive, rugged, camera that can zoom in close, take a good quality picture that I can easily transfer to pc.
Are there particular brands you like or hate?
no
Are there particular models you already have in mind?
no
(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)
Image Stabilization sounds intriguing.

I would check into the Canon Powershot SD450 and SD550.

The Canon A530 and Pana LZ3 are cheaper, have more zoom than the SD450/SD550 and may be good enough. They are bigger but may be small enough to fit into a belt holder.

The Casio Z10/Z110, Sony W30/W50 are small and fairly inexpensive.

The Casio's have anti-shake DSP similar to IS. The LZ3 has IS but no viewfinder.

Other cheapies but goodies are the Canon A430, Nikon L3/L4, Pana LS2 with IS, Pentax M10, Sony P200, and S45, S600.

Consider the Pentax Optio W10 - waterproof, dustproof and pocket-sized. The camera has a very unique LCD that is very easy to see in bright daylight situations. Available for $250-275.
