Would any camera need the new Extreme 3, or is the Ultra 2 fast enough.
I've been debating which camera to buy this month, and
will probably buy the A95. However, since it only has a
USB 1.1 port, I'd had to buy a USB 2.0 reader.

A USB 2 reader with an Extreme or an Ultra is a waste of time. You really need a Firewire reader to make use of the download speed possible from the card.

Maybe the Nikon D70 or an EOS 20D might take advantage of the Ultra III, a A95 certainly won't get close. While we're at it, if you want to take advantage of the extra speed of the card I'd spend your money and get a decent reader, the cheaper ones aren't much cheaper than USB 1.1 anyway.

Yup, like others have mentionned, the A95 won't even come close to taking fully advantage of the Extreme III... Actually, I believe no camera on the market will manage to do that... Of course some will come closer than others, but they will still remain quite far from that speed.
For the A95, even Ultra II is too strong for it... It will work fine the camera, maybe improve its write/read speed by some ms... Something not even noticeable... For that camera, a 12x card should be plenty(the Ultra II is 66x).
And for most compact digi cam(and some dSLR), ultra II is an overkill. So Extreme III is really ahead of the technology in cameras on the market.

Ok. At least I know that I don't need to spend the extra cash on the Extreme 3.
No one has it listed yet, so who knows how much it will cost.
Initially I was thinking of buying a 512MB or 1GB Ultra 2, and a USB 2 reader since I don't have a FireWire port.

Isn't the 1gb extreme III about $105??
and the ultra II 1gb can be had for about $95?
To be honest, in most consumer point and shoots, the new 1gb standard from sandisk is faster than fast enough and is only $65.
I wish i had bought the standard instead of the ultra II. that $30 could have got me some pizza. and beer.

USB2 is 80Mbits faster than Firewire
Fast cards are only of use in camera that is write accelerated and we are in to 20D territory then
