Differences between card manufacturers

I wonder if someone could help with what should be a straightforward query. There seems to be a wide range of memory options available and if you take CF cards for example, numerous manufactuerers offering different prices for the same amount of storage space.

Is there a difference between manufacturers in terms of performance etc I should be aware of or is it simply a case of find the cheapest and buy, buy, buy.

In the case of CF cards there is a difference depending on which flash controller is used. While the following page is primarily for dSLR's you may find the information useful.
