new camera but can't load pics to my computer

I have bought an olympus mju500, have loaded the software on to my computer but when I try to download my pics I get a message saying 'failed to load plug ins required to get media from devices' another message reads 'software unable to find an olympus digital camera connected to USB port on your computer' Now I know I am an illiterate where computers are concerned but my computer is less than a year old and I did'nt have this problem with my last camera, Nikon coolpix 3100. I also tried my Nikon (which worked fine before) but am getting the same message there too
Beginning to wish I had'nt bought it now. I do hope someone can help

The easiest thing is to buy a $10 card reader and use that to download your pictures instead of the camera.
